Not just Espon. I just bought a Canon IP4200 and it only takes CAnon ink while my old IP4000 took what ever you put into it.

Let them do what they want. All they want is profit. I will only buy from manufacturers who believe in free competition and free spirit! Who's with me???

I was getting my ink for my Epson R300 from www.mediawrite.ie but they are out of stock and don't look like they'll be getting more unless Epson are reeled into court.

I was lucky enough to be able to get 5 boxes of Datasafe ink ( a whole set containing: 2 blacks and 1 each colour ) from http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk. Total cost £34.36 ( approx €50+ ) for the 5 boxes, inc. delivery to Dublin.

This just literally got delivered today so I have not tested ...but they are there until stocks last ....get them while you can.

why cant you get the ink refilled? Cartridge world refills are half the price of what you would pay online or from the original manufacturer.

As WAk points out, you can always get refills: they can't enforce patents on them, although Cartridge World's prices are probably around 5 times what I usually pay from the UK.

Is it that they're trying to shut down the companies that make cartridges compatible with certain printers from Epson or is it they're trying to get rid of the companies who produce the refills?

A shame, they were the 2 brands of printer I used to recommend to people in the past because you could get cheap 3rd party cartridges for them.
The really sad thing is that since there are only really four big names in printers (at least as far as the average Joe home pc user is concerned anyway, the remaining two being Lexmark and Hewlett Packard, whose cartridges have always been outrageously expensive and for whom it was much harder to find cheap 3rd party compatibles), there is now nobody left making ink for printers but a bunch of greedy money grabbing bastiges. So even if you don't from now on buy Epson or Canon, the other two greedy pig companies will still screw you anyway.

Ah, feck the lot of them!

No more printing for me. Ever. :v:

ive got about 5000-10000 sheets printed with one hp cartridge refilled numerous times. hp printers are by far and away the best available. get the ink from tesco for 5 euro, will refill 3 or 4 times from the one pack.

Well a lot of Canon cartridges are cheapish - the ones for my printer are anyway.

I have a Canon ip5200 and they can't refill my cartridges. There is a chip on the cartridge and when the it's empty the printer writes to the chip and will then reject it even if it is refilled.

I get my ink at http://www.bigink.co.uk
Prices in sterling but far cheaper than anywhere...1.50 shipping to ireland.
    Still have Epson Ink

    These chips can be reset...

AFAIK the reason for the big difference between Canon/Epson and Lexmark/HP is that Canon and Epson build the print head into the printer (which means that the print head is meant to last the life of the printer) while the other two build it into the cartridge, which makes the cartridge so much dearer.

Epsons have been "chipped" for ages now, but that the newer Canons are too is news to me. Damn...

    Hi

I get my ink cheaply from inkcycle.co.uk in the UK and it's grand... it's quite hard to purchase it VAT free though if you're a business customer.

I thought there was some European ruling preventing printer manufacturers putting chips into catridges so that fakes can't be used with that printer... the printer companies are obviously trying a new tactic to make us buy their overpriced cartridges.

Sorry m8, but I don't think so. Unless it's in the combination of cost + shipping.

The reason the cartridges are overpriced is the same reason that the machine itself is significantly underpriced. People don't seem to complain about that as much though for some reason?

The Ink for my Canon Printer is £4.00 a cartridge. Not too shabby.

Buy a laser and stop messing with those inkjets.

I get about 7500k-8000k pages from one toner in my Laserjet 1200 even though it is only rated for 3500k. A genuine HP toner is about €80.
