It also depends on what exactly you need.

What size? What speed? What type of connection (USB/Firewall) ?

Size isn't really an issue as it is mainly just for storage, at least 200G and the speed is dependant on the price.

What soft of difference is their in there with the speeds ?

USB 2.0 has a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire has a 400 Mbps interface but Firewire in the end is faster due to the way it works. In reality I don't see much difference between either of them and it's possible to get externals that operate on both systems.

Your motherboard would need to be firewire-able also.

I have a This model and it's always worked out ok for me.

I could be wrong but is there really that much of a difference between the major players these days? Besides some drives having a buffer of 16Mb instead of 8Mb I don't know if there's a lot to choose between.
