Ali vs Frazier

    RTE showed the excellent "The fight" documentaries last night, repeated from BBC last year. Covered a couple of Ali's biggest rivalries. Fascinating watching slow mo footage from the Sonny Liston fight, went deep into the "phantom" punch that knocked Liston down, and discussed the rumours of Liston throwing the fight for the mob. I never realised before that Liston was unfairly counted out.
    It was most interesting on the biggest grudge match in history, the "Thrilla". TBH i've never gone along with the fawning attitude towards Ali. True, he was the most gifted ever, but i don't like the lazy sports journalists who automatically label him the number one sportsman ever. His cheerleaders in the media and his numerous celebrity chums never mention the unsavoury side to him.
    I was reminded of the quote from Joe Frazier when he was told that Ali would be lighting the flame at the Olympics. He said "I hope he falls into it".
    Last night reminded me how badly he treated Frazier. Years of taunts and racial slurs, calling him an "Uncle Tom" surely the worst thing you can call any black man. The irony of course was that Frazier was the guy who helped him out when he couldn't earn a living, did joint publicity events and gave him money when he most needed it. And the thanks he got was abuse.

    The footage though is fascinating, Eddie Futch basically invented bobbing and weaving for that fight, and the impact of Ali's right hand on Fraziers face. Ouch! And as for the evil left hook that felled Ali in their first fight......
    Basically Ali underestimated the hatred Frazier had for him and how motivated he was, there was a great quote from someone who was directly below them when Frazier had ali on the ropes:

    Ali: They told me you were finished Joe
    Frazier: They lied Champ!

    Better than watching (allegedly) thrown Irish fights!

    Yeah i saw that program too. It was pretty good. It did seem like Ali was a punk, he really ripped it out of Frazier, considering Frazier knocked him out. Calling him Uncle Tom and a white mans lackey seemed too much. I don't care how good he was, he seemed like an asshole to me.

    Oh pardon me!

    Is boxing not a martial art?
    Does boxing not relate to self defence?
    Do people here not train in boxing?
    Is the boxing forum not completely dead?

    The reason I posted that is because the boxing forum needs some activaty and this thread would generate some . Thats not to say it's dead either , it only needs a good discussion to get people to post .

    It doesn't matter wheather boxing is a martial art or not , soccer threads posted on the sports forum are moved to soccer , because there is a forum for it .
