What's the cheapest way of flying from San Diego to San Francisco? I've been looking at web fares but they all look huge.

I think you're fairly out of luck. Not many of the low-cost airlines serve San Francisco airport, so it looks like connecting via somewhere and it does look expensive enough, on the random dates I've tried.

Like BuffyBot said, not many low cost airlines serve San Franisco - but you should have a look around Orbitz. Most low cost flights go into cities around SFO, but they can be a pain to get to.

Greyhound busses will go from San Francisco to San Diego, probably via LA, but it'll take a good while. Try their website anyway, GreyHound.

I know United and US Airways are the only airlines that go SFO-San Diego, neither of which are very cheap.

Try Oakland Airport - it's the other side of the bay and takes just as much time to get into downtown as from the main airport. I know some of the low cost airlines fly in there.

I flew in there last year with Air Alaska (not from San Diego, mind you).

Slightly off topic, but if you're everflying out of San Francisco to the east coast (New York, Washington, possibly Boston), then you should definetly check out Song Airlines. They're a subsidary of Delta, but far better. Probably one of the best airlines I've ever flown with; they're a budget airline, but you wouldn't believe how different they are to the likes of Ryanair.
Great service and dirt cheap fares - San Francisco to New York (JFK) last August for $100 each way, booked about 10 days in advance.

Soon not to exist. It's being folded back into Delta, it's owners.

Even more slightly off topic - I was in the US last week and reading USA today. They had a travel supplement and in it was an article on how to get the lowes fares.

One of the most interesting points was that airlines tend to post their cheapest fares on their websites on a Saturday morning. So if you are going to book, have a look at fares on a Saturday, you may be lucky.

That's a shame then. I flew Delta on a few domestic flights before, they were probably on a level with Aer Lingus, not that great at all really. They could learn a lot from Song.

Also, not much of a secret, but if you're using sites like Orbitz or Expedia or anything like that, they're handy to check general prices for your travel dates, but it's usually cheaper to go to the airlines actual website and book direct. It normally saves about $10-20.

I flew from San Diego to San Francisco last summer.
Southwest Airlines are the cheapest. They're the Ryanair of America.
Fly San Diego to Oakland. It can be gotten for as low as sixty dollars if you time it right. I think I paid eighty or ninety dollars. The San Francisco subway system runs from Oakland Airport straight in to the heart of the city in less than five minutes.
    Here's a map.

Thanks for the answers, very helpful.

(Other friends are taking a train from NYC to Florida. Know how much it costs? $800!)

amtrak.com lists it as 106.00 USD, one way from "01-JUL-06" (picked at random)...

New York, Penn Station (NYP) to Miami, FL (MIA) (30h 56m)

Maybe he has a good few stops or something?
