speed tests for cable internet

    i tried a speedtest on my cable internet and got a download speed of 3233kbps and upload speed of 349kbps. ive been told that the upload speed is the actual speed and not the download speed as i thought, is this true? thanks

    not quite - the upload speed is usually kept to a minimum to accelerate download speeds. All web usage involves both upload and download, even web surfing.

    It depends on what you're doing - if you're downloading files or data or video/audio streams, the download rate is what you need to look at.

    However if you were doing something like sending big email attachments, sending documents to a web server or briefcase type thing, or running some kind of public server on your computer (e.g. a multiplayer game server) then upload speed becomes very important, TBH most broadband upload speeds are feck all better than dial-up.

    Surely the average 256k upload is a lot better then the 56k upload we had under modems? (Not entirely sure if modems could upload at 56k? Was it symmetric or asymmetric?)
