Canon A620 or SLR?

I'm considering buying a camera, just for occasional use. I don't want anything to mad, just something that takes super clear, high resolution pictures. A guy recommended a Canon Powershot A620, but said if I was after picture quality I should look at an SLR. Can anyone help me with this as I don't know too much about cameras and I want to know which would be the best one for me. And if anyone could give prices that would be a big help!
    Cheers!;)

A (digital) SLR is only any good if you seriously wanna take up photography. I think for your needs the Powershot will suffice. I've been using a similar point and shoot cam for nearly 3 years and was very happy with the results. As I wanted to take my photographs to next level I recently bought a digital SLR cam. So if I were you I'd go for the powershot for now.

Agree with Dimy and the A620 is an excellent camera.

Here's an example taken with the cheaper and lower res A510.
