    I have the below system.

    3000+ amd64
    1GB generic ram
    Radeon rx600Pro gfx card.

the performance in games of the system in general is poor. like when i turn on high detail and stuff there is unacceptable frame rates.

i want to get a new GFX card as i think thats the bottleneck.

    shall i get a x850xl
    x1800xl or a 7800gt?

which one will offer good FPS in HL2, WoW and others like fear etc and the best value.

    I can get a 7800GT for 318 euro, a 850xl for about 250, and a 1800xl for about 350

Id be going for the 7800GT. Seams like a good price. A friend of mine has it and says its good for all them games (Hes mad into BF2). Hes got the same processor as you aswell.

if you are tight on money and have pci express, have a look on komplett.

They are selling off club 3d X800XLs for 210 euro last i saw.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308359&cks=PRL

Best budget buy you will find.

An X850XT is also not all that bad a buy for around 270 on komplett, but if you can get a 7800GT for around 320 euro get the 7800GT.

Ok, well basically what i want is a card thats not going to fold up and die at 1024x768 with full quality and full AA and AF etc...

I don't care about 1600x1200. which is the best value?

X800XL if you are only playing low res.

x800xl will play bf2 med to high settings sweet at 1024x768.

I have a X800XTPE which is around 10-15 frames faster in games and will play bf2 with a healthy mix of med and high settings well at 1600x1200.

It's a good card for now. But will prolly begin to fade in 12 months.

Last I heard, 7800GT's were all created equal (more or less)

Oh yeah, another vote for x800xl if it's cheap (or even x800gto)

7800gt's are anything but created equal - can vary in core speed from 400mhz to 480mhz.

I've a 7800GT and just finished playing FEAR with everything high/on but soft shadows at 1280x1024 and averaged 80fps.

Lovely card with good drivers. (bare in mind though that I've oc'd mine to 482. See sig.)

True, but you've also got an OC'd X2 :p Plus, he'll only be playing at 1024x768, so 7800GT seems overkill.

I seem to have forgotten something -- are x1800xl's better than 7800GT/GTX's, or am I confusing something here?

nope the x1800xl is not better than the gt, but its got more oc headroom than the gt.

yep..you can overclock the x1800xl upto x1800xt levels..
I'd recommend waiting another 2 or 3 weeks as these cards are scheduled to go down in price now that the x1900 series are out..

Anything is better than an X600!

Most of these high end cards are CPU limited no matter what CPU backs them up (of course, within reason) - its the whistles and bells special effects that the better cards do better. If you have 1 core at 2.4 or 2.6 with a gt you should get similar performance to my machine i reckon.

Saying that though - I upped the voltage via a bios flash on my gt so it would have to be a good gt - and still mine runs hot as **** (70 degrees peak) so an additional fan is required and is going in soon - thats with a new vga cooler.

All 7800GTs are created reasonably equal. The dearer ones seem to have slightly cherry picked cores, maybe OC a couple of MHz higher than cheapo ones. I say buy the cheapest 7800GT u can get your hands on. No point in settling for an X800XL to save a few quid. The GT annihilates it.

that gpu has a core speed of 400 mhz as apposed to the vanilla gt at 450mhz,also is there a difference between gddr3 and ddr3?because that card only has ddr3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,812 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Cheapest 7800GT is >€70 dearer than an x800xl -- so it's a very unfair comparism.
Anyways, there's an x1600xt available for €212; should be perfect for that processor -- not too expensive, good power, good bit of life left in it, SM3 and all that.
6800GS for €238 not bad either.

@christophicus: gddr3=ddr3. Also best RAM for GPU's nowadays.
