Just saw this a few weeks ago. It's graphic, to say the least. A very good film though; accomplishes exactly what it sets out to. The style of storytelling - be it the camera-work or the content - certainly isn't 'easy' to watch, but really, that's where its merit lies. It's highly engaging, if nothing else.
You'll never be able to think about Monica Bellucci in the same way again :(

    Seen it? Opinions?
(Sorry if this thread's been made before, but I've never seen one).

The constant "fog horn" noise at the begining (goes on for about 15 mins) I know put a lot of people and they turned off. I liked it, especially the extinguisher scene:eek:

Thought it was a bit too much tbh, no doubts that the camera work and direction were great but i think a films gotta be enjoyable to watchand that just pushed it too far with the Belucci scene.

I think with the noise, the intention was to use sounds that would make the viewer uneasy and even nauseous.

its a great film alright, i really like the switch in mood half way through, really adds to the impact, the sort of "NNNNNNOOOOO" effect of the ending.

I thought that the director went way way way way OTT on this flick. Obviously im talking about the scenes in the "Rectum" club and the tunnel scene. While the rest of the film had lots of class and style, and was quite engaging, i got the impression the director wanted to shock for the sake of it, and just try and put the sickest possible stuff on screen. I mean was there any need for that incident to go on for so long? for me it was extremely distasteful, I wouldnt have the same opinion if it was 30secs or a minute long.
Actually its the only film i have ever FF because the scenes repulsed me so much.

Okay, the scenes in the rectum club may have been a bit unnecessary to the plot of the whole film. I personally saw no point to, or merit in the "fist me, fist me" lines, etc. But - the rape scene was every bit as long as it should be. You say it was distasteful, and it damn well should be. Remember that the rape scene itself was not overly explicit from a visual point of view. It depicted what it had to, in terms of what Belucci's character went through and the ugly attitude of Le Tienna or whatever his name was.
The disturbing nature of the rape scene is essential, IMO, to the whole film. The film aimed at realism and rarely fell short of it, for better or worse.

    What do does FF mean?

    Fast Forward, I imagine.

Great film I thought. Amazing and inovative camera work and time keeping. A very emotional piece of film.

The scene in the Rectum club was of course meant to shock you. It's right at the start of the film and you're supposed to think this is the most gruesom, disgusting thing you've ever seen -- what could possibly motivate these sick bastards to go so far? And then, through the course of the film, we find out exactly what would make them go so far, and begin to wonder was it actually 'too far' at all.

I thought it worked very well. Not at all an easy film to watch (I think just below 'Requiem For A Dream' in the great-but-no-I-don't-want-to-see-it-again catagory).

    Yes FF is fast forward

I take your points on the rape scene, but I would still have to disagree for one reason, its simply too long. I mean a rape scene is always going to be harrowing and difficult to watch, and ok if he wants to make it a bit longer then usual to hammer home the disturbing and horrible situation the girl was in, but for me it was almost voyeuristic by the director himself. How long was it ? close to 10 mins or 6-7 mins anyway i think.
Your sitting there watching it and it goes on, and on, and on. I dont think thats very artistic really, and this was an arty kind of film......

got to see this in the cinema and thought it was an excellent movie, the camera work/noise made me really uncomfortable at the start (some people actually left after 15 minutes of the camera work) but other than that.. one of the best movies i've ever seen.. although it's unlikely i'd ever watch it again.

the end is so much nicer and at the same time so much worse again. .
i found myself thinking about this film for a long time after, highly recommend it for the non-squeemish.

I remember watching this in the IFI upon its initial release. At the time in the cinema everyone (including me) seemed very uneasy at the graphic beginning but this waned slightly as the film reversed towards its idyllic end. However having the sheer precognition of what was about to happen "later" was even more horrifying and this is where the film really drew its power from I felt.

I vowed that once was enough to see this until I was given the dvd as a present. Even the dvd cover disorientates you as it's also reversed back to front - a bit gimmicky for such subject matter I guess.

I have yet to re-watch it (if at all).
