External DVD

I bought an Emprex (repackaged BTC) external DVD last year, much to my shame, so I've decided to replace it with one that's more reliable.

I was just wondering if I can reuse the enclosure and save myself some money by buying an internal drive, can I use any IDE drive in the enclosure or can there be problems, I've heard of some drives overheating, should I be concerned?

And if anyone can suggest a good drive it'd be great too, I'm not loking for lightscribe or anything fancy, just something that I can trust!!

If you want to go with an internal drive then you might look here.

As far as your problem goes I can't really help, but there shouldn't be any problems if the enclosure has a fan.

Yes you should be able to use any drive take apart the enclosure beforehand and take a look at the chip its more than likely a prolific chip which are very common and the same ones that end up in most off the shelf enclosures you buy.

As for a Lightscribe capable drive well I would recommend the BenQ 1655 which is a very good quality DVD writer that also has LS support.

Finally bear in mind that 16x write speed is not possible [tops around 14x if you try to burn at 16x] when using internal drives in an external enclosure as external drives usually have a tweaked firmware to account for the USB2 or Firewire interface.
