I've just been told by the sky bot on the phone that I can only buy a sky plus box from Sky and I must pay the €75 instalation whether I want it or not
AND I cant get it from an independent retailer because I'm an existing customer... even for €299 or €304

    Comments anyone??

    Tony ?

My box is saying system fault which I think costs about a €100 to fix and is downright ridiculous after 2 years.
This is the 2nd sky plus box to go wonky on me...

    Just replace the hard drive.

The service charge means they will come and fix it. They will replace the box if necessary with a reconditioned one (if it isn't a cabling/LNB/Dish problem)

You can get Sky+ boxes on ebay (both new and 2nd hand) and a call to Sky will then transfer your card to the new box. But it's likely to cost a lot more that 100 and I believe there is some limited warranty on the 'replacement' box you won't get from ebay.

Threatening to cancel works for some people - sometimes they give you a new box, sometimes they say OK your account is cancelled.

    Well I know that.
I was hoping to get away with less than €100 if I put a new 160 hard drive in it myself.
It's more that a year old so out of warranty.

A 160GB drive is going to cost you 85 at least, then you've got to fit it and this is presuming that the problem is the hard-drive, it's the most likely cause but by no means certain. Given all the time and hassle is it worth saving a tenner and taking the risk that it's not the HD?

Well it happened me before christmas so , it was simple as going out and buying the biggest best hard drive and whacking it in.

If its coming up system fault its 97.9% that it is the hard drive. Since changing mine its perfect.

Heres a quality tutorial I used.

tony do you sell the new pvr3's because my box is fcuked up no end, has been good for 2 years now, but has given up on me many times, i assumed it was the update but id just rather a new box altogether, how much do you charge for the pvr3 or should i go for a 160 if the price is near it?

I presume you mean the 80gb box, yes i sell these but not the 160 as I think its a terrible machine noisy and unreliable, we got one for a customer and replaced it three times without success, she now has an 80gb box and a nice refund .:)
I think most guys are selling at 299 but theres a discount for you as a board member (as you dont need an lnb) :)
