I've been livin with this :x86 family 6 model with 466Mhz and 392megs of ram, for the last six months, ever since my last machine died on me (it was a mid spec P4 2.4, the motherboard fried!)

In the next couple of weeks I expect to have about 1600E to spend, my question is, if you were me what'd you get: I've been playing with Komplett's system builder and I'd like to see if anybody chooses a similar spec. I'd prefer an AMD processor 3800X2 perhaps, they seem to have the best deals.
I think the 6800GS is the wy to go with the Gfx card too, opinions?

What do you intend using the computer for?

Do you need to get a new monitor with that cash? Do you want it to be LCD? Or are you happy with CRT?

    Thanks for the reply Khannie,
I was condidering the viewsonic 19" model on Komplett
( http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311134&CKS=PCW )its got very good reviews, it'll eat into my budget but I hope for it to last through a few upgrades at least.
I'll be using the machine for everything, watching and editing movies, playing games I hope to set up a wireless network with my xbox and stream music, movies throughout the house.

It took me 5 1/2 months to get my BT broadband and then they activated the wrong phone number so I lost my telephone for a week untill they sorted it out!! hang in there its worth it once you get it.

ok, here's what I would buy (of course you have to choose your own stuff):

    PSU, 100 euro: http://www.hitide.ie/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/32/products_id/323
    Case, 60 euro: http://www.hitide.ie/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/33/products_id/325
    Processor, 360 euro: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308955&s=sc
    Motherboard, 120 euro: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311244&s=sc
Monitor, 390 euro (ouch, but your choice, but nice): http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311134&s=sc
    DVD Burner, 45 euro: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=314089&s=sc
    DVD reader, 22 euro: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=315379&s=sc
    Graphics card, 263 euro: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=313892&cks=SPC
    Ram, 200 euro: Shop4memory.com, 2 x 1Gb DDR PC3200 Value CAS2.5 Dual Channel kit - GeIL

    Total: 1560.
The rest you'll need for things like cabling, fans and such like.

Edit: The graphics card I put in there was somewhat budget restricted. If it were totally my choice, I'd probably get a cheaper monitor and plump for a 7800GT. I also chose the SLI motherboard because it would allow you to stick in a 2nd 6800GT at some point in the future.

2nd edit: I noticed you preferred the 6800GS. I don't know what the difference between the GS and GT models are, so if you do, make up your own mind on that one. There's less than a tenner in the difference between the two on komplett.

    Thanks Khannie,
Some interesting choices from you there, The 6800GS gets better marks than the Gt version in most tests i had to look my self cos i could really see any differences initially. We both picked the same Mobo, its getting very good reviews, i thinks I'll go for the http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311800&cks=PRD chassis its expensive but its got good independant reviews and seem very upgradeable, it'll hold upto 10 drives, mega terabyte here I come :) , i'm torn regarding the processor, I had thought of going for the 3800X2 cos i do a lot of multi tasking but the one you selected looks good too, i have gone over budget with my choices by 100E or so so I'm gonna have to compromise somewhere, thanks again for your input, it made good reading.

Can't believe I forgot the hdd.

    Samsung P120's ftw.

I have that mobo irishshogun. First thing you should do is upgrade the bios when you get it (mine came with the 1.0 revision of the bios....getting dual channel ram working was not an option....crashtastic. Flashed and it worked perfectly). THey have an excellent windows tool that checks your bios version, downloads the latest, and installs it for you. Quality.

do you sttil need to update the bios on new boards to accept dual core cpus?

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

Yes, but you can still boot with the dual-core, you just need to flash your bios then, to get everything working spot-on;)

The 6800gs is a worthy replacement for the 6800gt, it has less pipelines (12 as apposed to 16) but has higher clocks and higher overclocking potential, 2 of these in SLI absaloutely whoop a 7800gtx around 25% better:cool:

    I'd believe 2x6800GS > 7800GT, but GTX? Erm... typo?

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

    No, no typo:D

2 overclocked 6800gs in SLI whoop a 7800gtx, and cost less too, and a overclocked 6800gs isnt far behind a 7800gt so imagine 2 in sli

I will post some benchmarks, google it i was amazed too:p
