Dublin Escrima seminar in March 06

Sifu Stefan Weber the head instructor for Newman-Escrima in Ireland will teach a four hour seminar on Saturday the 11th of March 2006.

Escrima is a weapons based martial art from the Philippines and while the initial training tool is the stick this is later developed into training with double sticks, knives, stick and knife, machetes, swords, palm stick, the staff and also empty hand Escrima.

The benefits of training with weapons is that it removes the feeling of irrational panic when faced with an armed opponent and is replaced instead by a healthy respect. It also teaches you how to make use of any implement which can be used as a weapon should the need arise.

The seminar will take place in Molesworth Hall at the back of St. Anne's Church on Dawson Street from 2.30-6.30pm and will cost 25 euros. Weekly classes in Escrima only commenced on the 7th of January in Blanchardstown with weekly classes due to start in Dublin City Centre in the very near future. As such beginners or anyone interested in Filipino Martial Arts is very welcome.

For further details don't hesitate to contact me at michael.oleary@iewto.org.

    Best Regards,

    Hi all,

This is just a quick reminder to those who contacted me a few weeks ago with an interest in attending the Escrima seminar. If anyone wants any further details don't hesitate to contact me again at michaelwingtsun@o2.ie or 086-3989345. If you want to know how to get there go to www.dto.ie, select journey planner and type in Molesworth Place as your destination and it will give you a map.

To those who would not initially be interested why not give it a go? Its only 25euros and if you have nothing else on this Saturday afternoon at the very least you will have a bit of fun. After the seminar we will go to Buswells Hotel for a few drinks and all are welcome. You don't need to dress up for afterwards as they are well used to us coming in all stinky. :D

    Regards all,

Yeah, we are a cheap date. :D

No worries if you cannot make it. We will have at least another two during the year so you or anyone else is more than welcome to try it out.

I also feel that for myself Newman-Escrima can to a certain extent bridge the divide between self-defence and sport in martial arts as it encompasses both as well as the whole pressure testing stuff. I am going to Germany with one of my training partners for a seminar on the 1st of April which is advertised as an introduction to Escrima "Fight Club". I know the title is a bit cheesy however now that I have finished my beginners progamme in Escrima I have to work on pressure testing it while working on my intermediate programme. So with helmets, box, hand and elbow mitts we will get to work with the sticks. It will be interesting to see what happens but I will keep you informed.

The whole sparring thing will also prepare us for competitions and whether competitions involves sticks, grappling, kicking or using a basketball it is all good fun.

    Regards,

    Michael.
