Suggestions needed for Poker forum!

I logged in yesterday lunchtime and when I logged in this evening there was 3 pages (!!) of new posts to be read, so following on from DeV's post here in this thread here I think we should consider some slight expansion of the poker forum. Just enough to ease the traffic volume in the current single forum, make it more efficient to read (and moderate), and generally just make it easier to find the stuff you want to read and avoid the stuff you don't.

So this thread is for people to suggest what needs to change in the poker forum. Being the nazi control freak I am I personally would like to see a few things happen.

    1) Create a Tournament Announcement & Information sub-forum.
Anyone wanting to post details of a tournament they are organising puts it here. It won't (shouldn't) fall off the first page due to high traffic volume and therefore will get more views. The usual "Event Guideline rules" apply.

Questions about current tournament could be put in here too.

    2) Create a Beginners/FAQ sub-forum.
There's always plenty of new posters asking questions and looking for information that has been posted a billion times before and that the regulars are sick of seeing. These threads would be moved to this sub-forum (or ideally started there by the new poster) and then those kind souls with time on their hands would answer the questions.

    3) The main poker forum would continue as usual with all the regular strategy, hand histories, poker news, etc, etc. But hope fully with the pressure eased as a result of the 2 sub-forums, good/interesting threads won't be pushed off the front page too quickly.

    4) Maybe add a new mod, my net access is a bit sketchy these days, hopefully back within a month, most of the other busy forums like Politics/AH/Soccer have at least 2 mods. Someone who's online a fair bit would suit.

So there you go, they're my thoughts on what's needed, could be completely wrong and pointless but something needs to be done to relieve the pressure on this forum (imho).

Definitely need a Tournament Announcements/Results subforum imho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

I like these suggestions TBH, I think these should take alot of the pressure off the forum and are just about the perfect sub-divisions. Possibly create a sub-forum solely for Hand Analysis, that would basically divide each of the main type of threads....

I think you could drop the Poker Awards 2005 Sticky...not much help but make it look more tidy.

    I vote Dub13 for mod !

    Ste05 as well...rock of sense.

I think becuase of the size of this forum it belongs in its own section outside of "Games".

I vote Dub 13, Culchie and Steo for mod.

I'll be posting all my crap on antes up if that helps the traffic!

Well I'll do it if needed, ty Culchie and Doc,

Doc's right too, Culchie would be a good mod

is there anyway of changing the page lengths? for example, why does the opening page only show 20 or so posts, why not 50, or 80, and if people wanna scroll down, scroll down. I RARELY will click onto the second page, but i'd have no problem scrolling down maybe 50 posts to see if there's anything that catches my eye.

i dont like the idea of subdiving the forum. im reasonably lazy and i like reading the odd hand history, but i'm not going searching for them. i think it may be a case of if it aint broke dont fix it, just make it longer if possible.

and Nicky is right, we need our own section... somehwere between biz and games should be POKER!!!!

    1. As DITp say more posts per page. Applies for all boards forums.
    2. Sub-directory for newbies- who usually get berated by the regulars for asking reasonable questions.
    3. Sub-directory for hand histories & analysis

what about having a sub forum for hand discussion and hand history,

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,040 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

Few things. The poker awards thread will be used next year and so on. Well that was the idea.
I agree with most suggestions but yet again we are discussing extra forums as if we have the power to add them when we don't. Another mod would of course help but I don't think the problems we have in general of late are anything to do with moderation. i.e. deleting threads etc.

Ironically it will probably make the forum busier. Are we really that concerned about where we are in the menu?

I think the original suggestion is great, but I defo think a sub-forum for hand history/analysis is needed. There's a lot of posts about these, and also tbh some people aren't that interested in them...Also maybe a poker theory section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,587 ✭✭✭gerire

The posts that are really getting to me at the moment are the:
    "Whats on in town tonight"
"Whos playing PPP £xxxxx now" type.

I would fully support a sub forum for these type of posts. And PM'ing a certain few people that antes up have a full list of local events on their site if they'd just bother look

    [/Rant]

Maybe we could have a thread called "Throw verbal rotton tomatoes at Pit-Boss" after all these posts take up a lot of room..

I jest (NO I DO PLEASE DONT ADD TO IT).
    Good plan Laf.

I was thinking about this too. A sub PPP forum ala Komplett, Blacknight and Elara in the computing section. Its basically a place where you can go to praise/ask questions to their staff and think it would be another contact point for PPP to have with their customer base?

You'll need to talk to Dev about it tho. afik the above companies all pay for their feedback forums

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,447 ✭✭✭califano

    verbal rotton tomatoes.

    better than real ones:p

no need gerire. ppp-pit-boss and karlh are also forum users with regular posts aswell as sometimes rep's. They would feel frozen and isolated like a carcus on a meat rack somewhere else and it wouldnt be fair.

can we leave it all the way it is?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

I like the idea of a paddy power hosted forum such as Blacknight etc etc.

Move the poker section out of games. It's quite pernickity to get at. Maybe a few subforums like the way antesup do it. Is it possible to maybe use those forums as sub-forums for boards?
We could just have an antesup thing up in the menu and then have all those lovely forums listed below.
Eventually we'll beat those 2+2 nerds to all the cool things!

And maybe sklansky might start posting up those bizarre ethical conundrums. Maybe. Someday!

I would def support splitting the forum up. How about Theory/HH/Odds based questions and tournaments/games/announcements

Its just a suggestion. I mean ideally we would love 4/5 forums but even just splitting up into 2 would be an improvment imho

By the by id just like to mention this is my 500th post  was planning on saving it for something special........unfortunatly world domination has thus far eluded me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

ban everybody, scrap everything and start again.
this poker craze will be over by April then it'll be back to the inbred losers who were here this time last year.

    or

get some help with mods like Culchie and steo and Big D and dub13, who i thought already were.

    or

leave it as it is and let them scrap over the tasty bits.

don't make the scrolls bleedin longer, they're bleedin long enough albleedinready!

i'm sure wisdom will prevail but too many sub forums are a pain in the rear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,806 ✭✭✭Lafortezza

How about just a Tournament Announcement & Info subforum for now, subject to admin approval obviously.

That sounds good. I'll give that a shot and we can see how thing go.
I'm not going to start to create a mass of subforums as explained before. I think if boards covers the main issues and Antesup covers the indepth stuff then the casual player can find the community here and they will discover Antesup over time (and vice versa as I've linked AU back to here too). This provides us with the best of both worlds with the general and the specific. I might well move Poker up into Games but there is a bigger plan for Boards then just poker (or soccer or, or ...) Suggestions such as La Fortezzas which fit with that plan will happen (as it has).

Muso, I'm all on for another mod, I know Hyzepher is kinda dormantish at the moment. If you and luke can think of a good person, let me know.

    DeV.

O.k. nice one Dev. I've moved the Poker Event Guidelines sticky into it. I cant think of an excuse to move any of the other stickys in their unfortunately.

The tourney sub-forum is great. Nice one. Just a suggestion but how about putting a sticky of casino's tourney shcedules or even a link to the tourney section of antesup in there? Just so people dont need to post "What's on tonight?" threads everyday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,782 ✭✭✭Scotty #

HH sub is a MUST. It would cut out 1/4 threads I reckin'.

...and alot of people don't bother reading them anyway!!

I disagree, HH is just part of a post.. used to better explain the hand. If it has its own sub-forum, posts with different subjects will get mixed up.. theory with bad beats, probability with boasting etc.. HH is not the subject of the post so I don't think it should have it's own sub-forum.

My suggestions are: (titles nicked from 2+2)

    Poker Theory & Probability
    Beats, Brags and Variance
    Learning to play/Beginner q's/Information
    Tournament announcements
    General Poker (main forum)

Lads, look at the logistics of this. Look at the forum already. The first page you see has NO posts on it because of the sub forums and stickies. If we create a ton of sub forums:

    a. Noone will use them because noone will use them.
    b. you'll be scrolling to australia to get to a new thread.

Antesup has a beginners forum for a start, and in fact I've designed the forums over there to complement the forum here (and the tournie announcement sub forum here, we don't have one of those over there you see?).

Spread the load and use both places, I'm not turning Boards into Antesup, end of.

    DeV.
