I'm heading here in May just wondering what the place is like, things to do over there and what to look out for there etc

Just back. A pleasant spot. The local weather tends to be the best in Spain(Europe's only desert is to the northeast of Almeria city).
The city centre is compact(you would walk around it in 2 hours). The Alcazaba fort(an old moorish stronghold) is on a hill behind the old town. Worth visiting, to view the city, and harbour, from the walls.
Depending on your interests, there are shops(Mango & Zara are cheaper there, FunkyMa tells me), restaurants(cheap eats to be had), and lots of bars(including two Irish ones). Smoking is allowed in a lot of premises.
Day trips out of town can be had, by getting a bus out to Roquetas, or Cabo De Gato.
Hope the above is of help!
