Hi guys this might sound like a crazy question, however do current dig boxes require the phone to be connected all the time

Apart from the odd balls who actually pay for movies and sky bet etc

Mine has never been connected in all its many years but now installers tell me its imperative otherwise they shut the box down remotely

It’s worth pointing out this installer said that he was in fact installing the latest sky HD box which was clearly a lie

For the first year of the contract, and for ever on multiroom. However, the installer is lying, through his fecking teeth.

I really want to get Sky installed instead of NTL. But I don't have a phone line and can't afford to get one either. Is there any way around this ??

Yes, pay Sky about €35 extra once off at install time.

Ask the clever installer how he plans to do that when there is no phone connected to it. Sky might shut off your service (and I would love to hear how they could get around that one - why is the line needed in the first place if you're not going to be ordering pay per view), but not your box, so you'll still have your FTV channels.

I'm sure but I can't find a link on the web. Phone up Sky to get an install and convince the monkey that you've not got a phone line, at all, no way in hell can you get one, etc.

You definately pay a one off extra payment to have no phone line.

Except mirror subs, which MUST have a phone line.

Sky will rather have your business than not if you have no phone line.

They do want folks to spend as much "online" as sub.

May I suggest that all the issues surrounding the phoneline are posted as a sticky. It seems to be a frequent quaestion asked, and I know many people who are unaware of the different rules governing the phoneline requirement.

They are going to start manufacturing these box's in March so I believe.

I'd imagine that the boxes are already manufactured. Isn't march/april the supposed launch date. They wont have much success of launching it for the world cup if they are installing them by then.

I placed my order for the standard Sky box and package on Monday and had no problem whatsoever asking for and getting the no phone line thing for €37.50.

When I got my sky connected the installer left the phone cable hanging out of the back of the digibox and told me to just connect it to the phone line when ever I wanted to buy or order anything, I got the impression it was no big deal. I`v never connected it,that was almost twelve months ago and I`v never heard a word from sky.

Does it have to be a standard Eircorm / BT phone line that you are connected to ?

Is it ok to use the Voip phones like Blueface or will sky not accept them ?

Conecting it to VoIP probably won't work because, as far as I know, Sky use it as a modem to transmit data. If your VoIP is compressed G.729 then I don't think you will have a chance in hell of getting it working. If you are using uncompressed G.711, then it might or should work.

It won't work on most VOIP. IF your VOIP supports a fax machine it may.
Some wireless Broadband services with phone are not VOIP in the basic sense, but have a dedicated bandwidth for phone, usually these support Fax and may support modems.

My missus just spoken to Sky and it seems that they have done away with the requirement for a telephone line. I spoke to them about 2 months ago myself and there was absolutly no chance of getting anything off them without it.

A good change in policey, perhaps their way of getting NTL's customers.
