    Hmmm...

    (4) for bookings after 16th March, Ryanair is increasing each passenger’s luggage allowance from the current 25kgs to 30kgs (comprising 10kgs carry-on and 20kgs checked-in luggage) which will substantially reduce excess baggage fees and finally

    (5) all passengers travelling with checked in luggage who book after 16th March will now pay a fee of £2.50 (€3.50) per bag, per flight if booked in advance on the website, or £5.00 (€7.00) per bag, per flight if presented unbooked at the airport.

Seems fair enough, I'd say the summer is going to be a nightmare with lots of arguments around the bording gates though all the same.

I'd imagine there'll be weighing scales at the boarding games now, and if your bag is > 10KGS you'll be coughing up 7 euro and it'll have to go in the hold. Of course you could just keep taking clothes out of your bag and putting them on until the weight goes dowon :P

Still all and all the online checking will allow for around an extra hours drinking in the city centre when returning from those footie weekends in the UK.

They are probably not catching as many people out on the 15kg hold baggage now as they used to so are looking for another way to get that money back. But 3.50 for a bag weighing 20kg rather than the 70 or so that they would charger you in excess baggage has to be a good thing.

A long as I can still take on my hand baggage + laptop bag as I've been doing for the last while I'll be happy.

Does this mean we need to tell ryanair how many bags we're taking with us when we book flights? And that they'll charge €7 per bag if you show up with them at the airport, regardless or weight?

Yes, you will be able to select how many bags at time of booking and pay €3.50 per bag. If you just turn up, or turn up with more than you've advised, you would be charged €7 per extra/unadvised piece.

so now to get one of their lauded cheap fares you have to book in advance and know how many bags you are bringing and what they weigh at the time of booking.

Does O'Leary have a bet on with someone to see how many irritating stupid conditions he can make people go through just to save a few quid on air fare?

I think this is great. The vast majority of my trips are short visits & day returns. I can't remember the last time I checked luggage.

I flew Ryanair last week for the first time in years and the queue at Gatwick on the way home was miserable. As a result, I decided to stick with Aer Lingus where possible because their self-service check-in.

This announcement may change my mind again.

I wonder how long it will be before a passenger gets splatted by an overweight piece of hand luggage falling from above?? :D

So if i book and pay for three bags and turn up with two, I get a refunds for the third bag ?

Probably, but you'll get charged for claiming it - after all they'll be using all this guestimation to help trim their fuel bills ;)

Can you actually check in before you go to the airport?

I live close to the airport and it is really irritating to wait 2 hours in an airport when you can do it at home.

Yes that would be the idea of online check in, you can check in online from your house or b4 you leave the office etc

Ok where do you get your boarding card? Is the airport changing the system? I think it may be a bit of misunderstanding calling it on-line check in.

My understanding is that you will print off your own boarding card. This will have a unique barcode which will be scanned at security. There may be some new equipment required at the airport but I believe something similar is already used in the UK and elsewhere.

Unlikely they will use a barcode system. To guarantee a succesful barcode scan you need to print on laserjet printer, inagine people arriving with inkjet printed barcdoes which won't scan etc..,

Unlikely they will use a barcode system.

I'd imagine it will be very similar to BA's system which accepts pretty much any print page from an inkjet.

this sounds to me like is a fuel surcharge under a different name so they can keep claiming that they dont charge a fuel surcharge.

Sounds like it's time to dig out my old reliable 'ryanair trousers' - huge big combats with outsize pockets that can carry about 15kg of crap in the cacs alone.
