What ISP are you with? I had the same problem recently. I'm with Smart so I just switched over to their SMTP.

If you've switched ISP then you should use the smtp server provided by the isp. ISP generally block access to their smtp servers to people on other ISPs.

Imap server is generally only for incoming mail. You still need an smtp server to send out.

Didn't know eircom had an Imap server to begin with?

    No

    As posted already:
POP and IMAP are for incoming mail. (POP stores messages on your machine, IMAP stores then centrally on a server). STMP is for outgoing mail. SMTP/IMAP are not interchangable.

If you've switched ISP, or are trying to send mail from a non-eircom internet connection, then you need to change your SMTP server to that specified by your connection provider/ISP. Most ISPs (if not all, at this stage) limit their SMTP access to control spam originating from their servers.
