Norton Ghost

I just recently got a copy of Norton Ghost 9 and am in the process of backing up my laptop and my external HD.

    Just a few questions do.

I've created a copy of the image of my hard drive. My hard drive fails tomorrow I simple just get a new hard drive install windows load up Norton Ghost and copy over the backed up image and my HD is back up to date. Is that how it works?

I'm thinking of creating a master back up so that if I feel like formatting my laptop I'd just reload a bare bones image and reinstall what I want after that. Will this work for what I want?

yes for all except for this. You could do it this way, but the Ghost disk should be bootable, and you don't need to re-install windows first. Just pop in the disk, let it load, then point it to the image and where to restore it to.

Does this cause any licensing issues then? i.e. installing a XP on a new HD?

Licensing - norton is per PC so if you cloned the image to another PC you would need two Norton licenses as well as two Windows licenses

If only used as a backup for one computer then should be OK , but it probably upsets the small print.

tiny chance you'd need to run sysprep too - hopefully not.

Only reason I ask was because I was gona reformat my laptop and creat a "bare bones" back up and then install the "bare bones" back up on the house pc (using its own XP codes) but I'm not forking out for two copies of ghost.

    Whats sysprep?

When I bought Ghost v9 it came with a second copy of Ghost2003 in the box for older PC's.

If you got this then you could use one version on your laptop and one on your desktop.

You'll have a problem installing the image of your laptop onto another PC as more than likely the 2nd pc will have different hardware so there will be problems with drivers.

If XP detects too many changes since last boot it asks to be activated again.

you can restore to totally different HW with NtBackup, since the copy of windows you are using to perform the restore is already activated.

re: Ghost - if you are restoring to the same machine just one license - if restoring to others then others may be needed - check the EULA

partimage is on the knoppix cd free, there are many other cloning utils around too.
