I'm in process of building a new house. I want to build in a system that I can dial in or use the web or WAP to switch on the heating when I am about an hour away from the house.

The word that I am hearing that I need to do this is X10. Does anyone have experience of X10 and does anyone know of any Irish suppliers / implementers?

    Dummy,

These lads are based in Kildare and will do a free consultation.
    http://www.smartlitesolutions.com/

Installation you can do yourself with a little background knowledge. Much technical information is available on the web. Products are more widely available (and cheaper) in the UK for equivalent 220v modules. Search for "X-10 heating" on google.co.uk . . .

    hope this helps,

I've gotten some x10 (mainly lighting) products from www.simplyautomate.co.uk. You should contact them too and get their brochure. Just discovered x10 a couple of months ago it was featured on Channel 5's gadget show. For those that don't know x10 sends signals through your normal house electric circuits to plugged in receiving units. You can automate lots with it.

Thank you very much for the info. You have given me more than enough to get working on.

This will be an interesting project. I'm looking forward to getting started on it.

    Thanks again.

You can do this with a telephone controlled relay board and need not worry about x10 or if you dont want to have a dedicated landline can use a mobile phone controlled relay. I have a setup here that allows me to dial a mobile key in a code and turn on\off lights and or boiler for a specified amount of time. I have the key sequence stored as a voice activated speed dial in my own mobile so when an hour from home tell it to turn on heating and 10 minutes from home turn on outside lights. Works, simple and cheap.

    Hi,

In the end I had one of these installed - http://www.syxthsense.co.uk/ecommerce2/query_displayproduct.php?productID=1394

And it works very very well. I send a code by text and it switches on the heating system for me. I have the codes setup as templates on my mobile, so I can switch it on, off and request its status.

I also went for a very cheap alternative for other automation, called Bye Bye Standby. http://www.byebyestandby.com/

I just use it to control lamps etc - anything that uses a plug. Again I have access to it over the internet. I bought all my BBSB bits & bobs on eBay and gradually built up a nice system over time. I also have an App on my android that I can use to control these.

BBSB is cheap & cheerful and meets most of my requirements.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck.

This is what we have all been waiting for, simple online control. Brilliant. Many thanks

Try it out by buying small bits first of all.

You can buy 3 sockets & a remote for 20 pounds approx on eBay. See if this meets your needs by just using the remotes.

If that works ok, then progress onto an online controller. This is 50 pounds approx. Make sure that it is the right version and off the top of my head, it must be v2. I'm sure you can find the correct version on their website. Also, have a good read on their forum - you can learn a lot from it.

You can also operate these BBSB things using Harmony Home Automation s/ware. http://www.domialifestyle.com/
