    Hello all, newbie here.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what type of camera to get for landscape pictures. I am looking for a good camera around the 1000 euro mark.
I have been looking at the Canon 1Ds + 16-35mm f2.8 L zoom and a few others. If anyone knows even what camera type (ie.. Canon, sony etc..) I would greatly apreciate it.

    Thanks.

If it's for soley landscape, then I'd suggest you consider getting a large format camera. Apart from that, any camera at about €1000 will do the job. Perhaps even go for a cheaper camera and invest in a better wide lens.

Why have you been looking @ the 1Ds (~€7000 for the body) if you have €1000? the lense you mentioned alone is €1500?

Buy a Canon 350D (€750) and Get a Wide angle lense (sigma 10-22mm - €480), or even start off with the kit lense and see how you find it?

    Check out this online shop:

    www.ac-foto.com

The 350D with the standard kit lense is €797 + pp, the same thing in Galway Camera shop is €1000, but they actually have that Sigma lense (10-22mm) for €499, which is the standard price online too.

Also check out this site for reviews:

    Hey sean.

Was looking up that camera and the various prices. was just wondering if their would be any duty to pay through customs.
I'm thinkin of going to the states in June, do ya think I would be better off waiting until then?

Hey, From the website above, there would be no duty (its in europe) and you would get a european warranty with it.

In the states it would be cheaper (~$880) but you would have to be careful bringing it back through customs, you would have to carry it as hand lugggage out of its box, that would lessen the chance of getting caught.

    Its up to yourself!

I think the chice of lens will be just as important if not moreso than the camera, you'll ideally need a decent ultra-wide angle lens, so bear that in mind too.

Well, it's mostly all been said. I'd look at a second hand canon 20D (better than 350D), just make sure it's been well looked after. Then spend whatever you have left on a good wide angle lens. I'd strongly reccomend the 17-40mm L, however it might be a bit out of your budget.

Thanks cian and alb. I have been looking at various lens types and found that the 17-40mm L is the one for me, however I was just wondering would getting the second hand 20D instead of the 350D be vital or would it be too risky getting a second hand camera online.

In my opinion buying second hand camera bodies is more risky than second hand lenses - bodies have more that can go wrong, only a certain livetime of shutter clicks etc. So, if possible I'd go for a new body and a second hand lens, though if the lens you want is a kit lens, there's usually a great deal on it with the bdy so you might not save much. I imagine there's a loitof 20Ds on the market now with the new full frame Canon SLR recently launched.

This is a good lens Tamron SP AF17-35MM F/2.8-4, it gets great reviews on FM...http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=245&sort=7&cat=43&page=1 ...I was considering the canon 16-35mm myself but this might do the trick for the time being...I checked around the and the cheapest I found was in http://www.technikdirekt.de/main/en/foto/fotodigital/objektive/obj-canon/585835/-/Article.html?fillspace=1 at 349 and 22 euro shipping...this is even cheaper than bhphotovideo were I buy 95% of my camera gear its 499 dollars on there site. You should consider getting a secondhand body, just check the shutter count etc...you don't need speed if your photographing landscapes, you could pick up a canon 10d for about 500 - 600 secondhad, they are a great camera, not very fast but great landscape. I would also invest in a good cicular polarizer, some grad ND filters (LEE brand are excellent). You will also need a good sturdy tripod, manfrotto have an excellent range.
