Someone mentioned that it was possible the get HP checks done in Ireland by some crowd. Anyone remember? Same with checking Vin's and registrations that a car is not stolen etc.

Don't see how that would work tbh, I know of a few cars that belong to mates of mine that have been crashed, and repaired to an immac spec by the owner, no involvment of insurance companies

    Dunno how what would work?

VIN & registrations checks that if the car is stolen, written off. There should be a record of it if was every written off. HP simply checks if theres any outstanding finance. Obviously it only useful if someones gone through those channels. If someones repaired themselves theres no record of that. Of course not to disclose that when selling it would be fraud.

    From Oasis
Hire purchase on second hand vehicles

In all Hire Purchase agreements the car remains the property of the finance company and ownership of the items does not pass to the hire purchaser until the final instalment is paid. If you have found a used car that you like, before you buy it ask if it was previously bought on Hire Purchase. You should ensure that all Hire Purchase payments have been made on the car so the car belongs to the seller and not the finance company. The Hire Purchase Information register (HPI register) keeps information on all Hire Purchase agreements and, for a fee of 15 euro, you can find out if the car that you are intending to buy is still under a Hire Purchase agreement.
