Yes. When on holiday there, any of the bookstores / games shops I visited had at least 1 if not 2 floors of the shop dedicated to it.

I don't think all the floor (or 2 floors) would be dedicated to the soft porn manga.
The manga publishing sector is huge in Japan. You definitely get large manga sections in every bookstore. There are mangas for every genre ... including porn.

Yes, very popular with the young kids these days. Not in my day though, why back then we had Jenna Jameson doing two guys at once and I don't recall anyone complaining. And I used to tie an onion to my belt, which was the syle at the time.

To think hentai is only popular in Japan is abit naive in my opinion.

Unbelievably naïve, actually, since a large portion of Manga Porn is aimed at the US/foreign market.

I read an article a few years back talking about the lack of interest that Japanese production companies had for exporting their anime/manga to overseas market directly, the biggest exception to this rule being on the Hentai/pornographic side of thing where it was widely believed there was instant, almost guaranteed profits on any porn anime/manga exported to the US. That’s why much more Hentai stuff gets translated by large companies – because it sells better than ‘ordinary’ manga.

Then again, just to make sure we’re all talking about the same thing – what is the definition of porn in anime/manga? For instance, if an anime/manga is sex(or tentacle rape, if you prefer) and nothing but, it’s probably safe to call it porn. But is Perfect Blue porn because of the (admittedly shocking) simulated rape scene? Is it porn when a manga depicts a sexual encounter between two characters in a few pages, underlining character development or segue ways into a strip club? Is a flash of a girl’s pants, cleavage shot or a ‘nosebleed’ reference porn?

I fear too many people would answer 'Yes' to all of the above...

Hentai is manga\ anime porn, ie Secret Plot and black bible.

I think soft core porn or anything overtly sex related is called ecchi. Though the likes of Perfect Blue would not be considered ecchi because it is a thriller.
To call Perfect Blue hentai or ecchi becuase it has a rape scene in it is like calling Cross of Iron or Straw Dogs porn because they have rape scenes in them.

Slightly off topic... But what's with the nose bleed thing? I've never understood that.

yeah.. I kind of gathered that much. I wonder where it comes from though. surely blood rushes elsewhere when you are aroused... yes?

Jesus, ye people need to read more 4chan :P
Ill second whats already been said hentai is bloody massive.
We just live in an old school repressive state/culture so we dont come across it so much, but it's big in America, mainland europe, and Asia.
It's also as mentioned already historically a part of Japanese culture.

I often find people try to have a go at me over hentai when they find out im into anime/Japanese stuff, it really sucks :/ , It's so shallow, but I guess I can take comfort in the fact that they will suck until they die.

It's based on Japanese old wives' tales. They believed that getting to sexually excited caused too much blood flow resulting in a noise bleed.
It's likely that it grew out of Attila the Hun's death, where it said he died of a nosebleed after his wedding.
It was away of making sure teenage guys didn't get too excited by women by linking it to something unpleasant.

I will back this up. Per episode, Hentai anime is far more expensive to license than other kinds of anime. If you have seen much of it, you will also know that a good bunch of hentai has even lower production values than TV anime. So they are putting less money into it and getting more in licensing. The fact that hentai recycles a lot of animation should be obvious to someone who thinks about it (too much?) what is less obvious is the amount of whole sale recycling of plots, character designs etc. from one title to the next.

Basically in addition to making it cheap and selling it expensive, they are effectively remaking the same thign over and over and the US anime community laps it up. Just how much of a demand is there for this freaky anime scat rape hentai? Or in general, super-extreme stuff seems to outnumber regular/non-fetish porn-type hentai.

You do get some odd exceptions where talent and creativity (but your definition of both has to be flexible enough) come into play and you start getting actual real story telling and money behind the productions, and the resulting titles are artistically meritworthy despite/because of their content.

Often domestic (japan) market concerns mean that something is better handled - like say when a popular iro-game is being licensed. Also watch out for 'interesting' ideas; e.g. Magical Canan was 13 episode magic girl series that came out at the start of last year, unusually targeted possibly more towards a boys audience (similar to Lyrical Nanoha). Nothing exceptional, but be careful what torrent you get - they made a hentai version too.

And as for definition, I would define porn as any media entertainment designed primarily for sexual gratification/titillation. It may have story/acting whatever, but it will always have sex, and the sex is designed to entertain. The sex/nudity in Perfect Blue is there for different reasons, it evokes different emotions - sympathy/horror for Mima as she drives her own downward spiral and hits rock bottom.

I can't remember where I read this but I remember seeing something a long time ago about comic-reading habits in Japan that said that all sorts of people, including women and young kids, read manga concerning things which "we in the west" would consider far to lurid to be of interest to a wide audience. Not just sex but violnece and the grosser alien/monster type stories. They mentioned normal looking folks, male and female, on their way off to work and school, reading different, often weird manga on the subway (not in the privacy of their own bedrooms). Just another odd little thing about Japan I suppose...

As for me, I wish I could get hard core yaoi. But the fact that I can get ANY yaoi is surely a good thing. And not just the rather soft Fake and Gravitation either...

Isn't some of DMP's recent output what could be considered hard-core? Not that I've read any of it :v:, I just figured with the shrink-wrapping and the parental advisory stickers that...y'know.

I have some of their titles waiting for me at my local comic shop and you can't believe the glee I felt when I saw them all wrapped in plastic and warnings!! HEEEE! :D I'm still a bit paranoid they'll be full of feminine guys who weep on every second page  . I don't mind crying in my yaoi but it had better be for a good reason ;) So yeah, porn...

Wow! I like it there! I'm gonna hang around (and not just the cute/male forum, I also like yuri). I have a strange feeling that I might be seeing Sakura Kinomoto as I has never planned to very soon...

Its odd that you mention not getting yaoi titles. In western/US manga its the fastest growing subgenre, every publisher was trying to license more of it. CPM were still publishing their titles while they had their entire regular manga/manwha lines on ice.

As for Yaoi anime. Theres actually not a lot of it produced unlike the cloned maid/rape/nurse/scat/tentacle stuff produced cheaply for US export, the yaoi anime is produced for domestic sale really (Japan). That does mean that it is likely to be of higher quality. Much of it anime versions of popular yaoi manga. Don't know how *hardcore* any of these titles (anime or manga) are, and I expect that knowledge to remain third hand at best.

In general shrink wrapping tends to be on the increase. It is not an indicator of "hardcoreness". King of Wolves was shrinkwrapped with the usual warnings, but the sex/nudity was minimal.

As for all that 4chan/doushinji stuff ...shudder ... I tend to read torrent comments very very carefully nowadays on trackers that release manga.

"Pretty cure manga? I thought that was anime only"
"Ulp ... I am rinsing out my eyes with caustic soda "

No, I do. Just not as much as of it as I want. And I'm always really wary that it's going to be full of stereotypes which I won't like. Yaoi has a bad name for that among the ladies of the net.

I think I know what you are saying. Theres precious little originality or even realistic character types in male-oriented hentai - but at least it knows where its bread is coming from and makes it explicit at least.
    Party pooper!

Well King of Wolves wasn't really that kind of manga.

It's not just porn, Manga comes in all flavours. You can even get Manga that revolves around office workers, train conductors or a person who does nothing of any importance at all.

Or the 'infamous' economic theory manga. Or the How-to-draw-manga books, in manga form.

Actually reminds me that I meant to look for 'Even a monkey can draw manga'. Meant to be quite good - lots of locker room secrets and such.
