    I hate when this happens.

When I type anything in the middle of text that is already there, I am erasing the other text as I type. How can I turn this off?

    Press the INSERT key.

(top left above the arrow buttons).

That changes the text to insert instead of replace - you'll notice "OVR" down in the bottom infobar in Word turn off. (Overwrite).
    That'll do it :)

aye, it can be a killer... especially if you're typing a huge document and don't look up for a while... only to see lots of your work gone! :D
