Pricing a Computer Build for someone else.

    Hi y'all,

A person has asked me to build them a computer. The computer will cost about €1000 to build. How much profit should I be making to cover tech support and labour etc? and is there a standard percentage I should add on for that type of thing? This person is not a friend of mine so that doesn't come into play.

    Thanks for any advice,
    Noel.

If I was you I wouldn't offer tech support. They'll make you their bitch forever. I'd make it clear that NO tech support is offered once the PC is built and delivered in working order. Give them all the warranty information etc for the components used.

Thanks Stephen, No tech support is right. How does it work in relation to lightening damage modems and blown powersupplies do you know?
And also how much profit/markup should I be making?

I usually charge about €200 for building a PC. That includes an initial hr setting it up in their house and showing them how to use it e.g. firewall etc. I then call them after a week to see if everything is ok. Don't feel anyway guilty in charging that much because I guarantee they will ring you when they can't do something or something happens. Some people charge 10% of what the PC cost which is also fair enough but €100 (based on the €1000 it's gonna cost you to build this) seems a bit cheap to me for alot of your time and expertise.

Lightning damage... If I was building a new PC, I'd make sure I had a decent surge protector between it and the mains. For the sake of 20 quid or so its worth it. I don't imagine warranties would cover such damage. Most surge protectors have phone line ports as well as the usual mains sockets, so they should protect the PC/modem from getting fried.
