Not sure if this is in the right forum but does anyone know how I can convert sme small movies from the digicams which are either .mpg or .avi into dvd format so I can burn them to a dvd to play on the tv?

    Thanks

There are plenty of Apps out there that will do it for you. Search for Ulead Videostudio, a 30 day trial is available. There are plenty more.

    Cal.

You need a DVD authoring package for this job.

what CD\DVD burning software do you use?
If it's a recent version of Nero you probably have a program called NeroVision Express.
Open it, click on make DVD-Video, step through the wizard and include the AVI files. You can include different pictures for the backkground etc if you want to be brave.
NeroVision can burn direct to DVD disc, but it is better to select the option to burn to HD folder first. Then use Nero to burn the disc separately.

    I hope this helps

The Film Machine is great but you'll need to get a copy of Cinema Craft Encoder for it to work. :)

dvd shrink is more for ripping and burning dvds .
you can use it to burn ISO files too though. But you need nero to do so.
Here's how I burn my dvds, a bit labour intensive but if anyone can suggest a better method fire away:
    first use GUI4FFMPEG
    (thanks basquille)
it will convert your avi to mpg2 with no water mark, no async. its a little cpu intensive but gets the job done. (note: does not do multiple files)
next create a dvd menu with dvd styler
    save as an iso file.
burn said iso file with dvd shrink and your done.

I found that WinAvi works well, I converted Ghost in the Shell from avi to dvd and it plays well on a very tempermental DVD player

    Maybe make a sticky?
it's not all that easy to do by yourself. I mean you can probably figure our the process but finding a good combo of software can be a pain in the ass.

google "DIKO". It's freeware and does the job very nicely.

Not sure about a sticky tbh. There are already loads (though this does get asked a lot). At this point it's about weighing the cost of re-answering versus the shoving threads further down the page.

I think if everyone checks the Essential Free Software Sticky then life would be a bit easier for everyone.

It's really a great source for software.

    Khannie,

Maybe you could add DIKO into the Sticky for essential free software if at all possible.

Its about the only tool thats missing

HAHAHAHAHA. I don't believe it. Oh the irony. I'm going to add it RIGHT NOW. I've loads of stuff to add to that sticky actually, from PM's, but I haven't gotten around to it. Hopefully this week. *crosses fingers*

edit: Done. In future we can point people to it when the question is inevitably asked again.

    It couldn't hurt.....
