OK, maybe this will sound like laziness, but I'm uder pressure timewise. I need to set up a home office thingy , am doing two courses and teaching a third, so time is sparce

also i know almost nothing about wireless !!! have googled but getting confused

anyways I have bband by cors cable in the living room, just connecting by (ethernet??) cable to lappie, but now need to move that to back room so wirelss really only option.

bought a d-link LAN network kit, DWL650 carbus adpater for pcmcia slot and DWL900 AP as acess point. Wondering now will this work for me ??

cable modem is a motorola SURFBOARD SB5100

If I get the wireless card and adaptor to work how do i connect modem? it only has a ethernet and usb connection

the acess point has one connection has only one connection marked LAN

have i the wrong stuff? what do i need?

also i wanna use a dell axim v51. it has built in wireless , will that work and share the bband if i manage to set it all up?

I'm really lost here , some one willing to be bothered with stupid q's til I manage it would be appreciated.

    thx for the time eitherways

    I'm tired and unwell but.....

Read manual briefly - may have to configure AP via ethernet (lappy) directly first...
AP plugs into router via Ethernet...

x51 will work if you get it setup.

Eventually got the cardbus recognised (8 attempts, think the pcmcia slot bit dodgy)

connected motorala modem to the D-link Access Point

    Dunno what to do next?

THe WLAN monitor says good etc but no internet access

I'm guessing I've to set up IP numbers or something but havent a clue

I DID read the manuals, or am, theres an overload of info if anything and i really ain't got a clue what I'm doing

You don't mention if you want or will in the future want to connect more than one computer to your bb connection, the difference being that if you want more than one then you'll need to ditch the AP in question as according to its support pages it doesn't handle NAT and pick up a wireless router that has Network Address Translation (NAT) & Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) although NAT & DHCP can be worked around if need be but believe me you want a router with these in built as the work around involves using another computer with 2 network cards to act as a NAT & DHCP server. On the other hand if you just want to get your lappie up and running on wireless, what you have is fine.

If you need more info on setting this up then pm me and I'll read up on this setup a little more & try to walk you through it.:)

Mmmm Yeah you did just read the post again.

Just having a read through the manuals on the AP (as clear as mud, but then so was mine!)

Get back to you shortly, missed your PM until today as was using someone elses PC the last few days & didn't log in to board on it. Back in a jiffy.

OK here is a few links and a few conclusions:

    d-link AP reviews & Info

    http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review1480.html

    http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DWL%2D900AP

Left side of screen "Product Manual"

1st Use USB cable to set-up AP then use SNMP client software to control AP via wireless. I would presume you have done this already?

    Modem

    http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/support/default.asp?supportSection=CableModems

    Download the user guide >

    http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/SB5101/downloads/SB5101_UG_EN.pdf

Page 40 of the user guide shows that you have to use an ethernet crossover cable to connect to a bridge or hub, this is most likely to be the cause of your lack of access through the AP, so get your hands on a crossover cable (galwaydude18 makes em up over in > For Sale >FS Services) or you can get one in Maplins, Currys, Peats or online

    Axim Handheld Computer

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/axim_x51v?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs

If this is your Axim then it'll connect through the AP to the net but you may need to setup IP on this too.

    =>Integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b) and BluetoothTM Wireless Technologies

For future expansion I would recommend that you replace the AP with a Wireless Router that does all the DHCP, NAT, Firewall (firewall on each computer is still recommended) internally as its much easier to manage/setup. Would recommend the Belkin brand of w/router but not their cards, don't get me started on their PCMCIA cards, grrrrrrrr.... or if you have the cash the Linksys are meant to be great getting their technology from parent company CISCO which is the market leader. Also don't forget the little people when you do replace the AP and put it up for sale or better yet donate it to a good cause ;)

Hope this gets you up and running otherwise post again and I'll have another look.:)

I'm well impressed and appreciate all the effort

I had searched some stuff on the AP, but not the motorola modem, will read thro the guide

nope :( did notice a cable listed on the box was not inside, but thats about it

I actually didn;t think there was a USB connection on the ap, must look again

Might have such a cable (I have tonnes of cables "left over" from when work place was networked, but hehe dunno what it looks like)

As you've probably noticed I've not got a clue about wireless, would give up on it but really need net access int he other room. Finding the time to read up on it is kinda impossible before I finish the two courses, which is what I want it for !!!

You have been a great help though

(hehe I was thrilled lastnight when I got a i-red mini keyboard working on the PDA!!!, then spent hours tryign to configure i-red on the lappie, to know avail. configured properly (I think) thro control panl, but don't think the lappie has i-red built in !!! ... I aint got a clue !! )

    hate not knowing things !

No probs, just trying to increase my own knowledge before starting Network Course in FAS next month...:)

If you have any USB A-B type cable that will do (eg printer cable borrowed for a while)

You prob know this but a crossover cable is one you use to connect two computers together without a router/bridge, just plug it into the network socket on the computers, the TX and RX wires are 'crossed' to allow the transmission to get through.
As for indentifying them, it can be a bit of a needle in a haystack to find them amongst other net cables especially if they aren't labelled or a distinct colour casing, try holding the plugs next to each other and comparing the sequence of the wires or just test with two computers.
