Does it strike anyone as odd, that we still haven't been shown anything from the outside world yet? Not even a news report or a current day look at the characters backstories progression. Not even simple, trivial stuff, like who gets Hurley's money.

Makes ya think about whats the fallout in LA/Sydney over the flights. We still haven't been shown any family or friends wondering where the flight crashed and why they weren't found yet.

Is this something the writers have downplayed? And if so, why?
It strikes me as being significant to the complete plot of the series.

A whole bunch of other theories can be spawned from this idea.
Did the plane crash? Was the crash covered up? has any time actually passed since the plane crash? etc.

Other than the pre/during-flight flashbacks, there's been nothing shown off island. I always thought this was just down to it being from the crash victims perspective...

Maybe in the final episdoes (whenever that happens) they might show something like that...
