someone in work has adsl broadband (bt or eircom?) with a dynamic ip addy, he never heard of p2p networking.
whats the most user friendly client software for him to install, setup and join one of the networks?

i wont be doing it for him, so i just want to send him a link to
    1)download a client
2)a tutorial on setting it up.
anyone have any easypeasy links bookmarked that wont have him emailing me for a month:( ?

everything you need to know about bittorrent.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_torrent

    http://www.utorrent.com/download/1.4/utorrent.exe
i'd recommend this client, it fairly simple to use and uses very little ram(if that's an issue).

    edit proper link.

    www.utorrent.com
    client

    www.portforward.com
    how to setup port forwarding

By the way, if your buddy is on BTIreland Broadband, be sure not to use the port 6881 that most bittorrent clients use by default because BT "throttle it", apparently. I could never get the port forwarding check at http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl to work on port 6881, but I changed it to port 10000 and now it works perfectly.

Oh, and if you have no idea what I was talking about there :D : http://dessent.net/btfaq/

Little bit of info there, hope it helps!

what's the difference between all the clients? i've only ever used the "official" one and it's done me no harm, but all the BT sites tell me to download different clients...

if i switched to another one would i notice a speed difference?

some of the newer client offer more options
eg upload / download limits, email notification. priority downloads etc.

I used to use Azeurus bit is hogs a HUGE amount of memory - I think 80 -> 100MB............ I have now switched to uTorrent which is about 8 -> 10MB

Most of the clients are pretty good, but like quazzy said, Azureus takes up loads of memory. So, maybe not that great. I use bitcomet and its pretty good, I recommend it: http://www.bitcomet.com

Whatever you do though, don't use BitLord... Its a ripoff (of bitcomet) with advertising builtin, and it sends fake torrent information. Bad form!

some of the torrent sites won't allow the use of bitcomet. something to do with its sharing configuration.

which port is best to use with azureus on eircom?

the reason azureus takes up so much memory i believe is that it caches what it downloads into memory to prevent frequent read/writes to your hdd. if you are using utorrent your hdd won't last as long as it would if you used azureus

The 0.61 release of bitcomet solves the sharing configuration issues of the older version (i think it would connect to private trackers whether you were a member or not). But yeah some trackers still block anyone using any version of BitComet. Boo!

I wouldn't worry too much about reads and writes to the hard disc if you're only a casual bit torrent user....

    thanks for the links ;)
can you forward ports and set up a static ip addy with the standard reuter that comes with adsl (bt/eircom, not sure who hes with)?

yep, static IP or Dynamic IP will work. And port forwarding is pretty straight forward.

Just post back if you know which router he has
