Argh! I just went to email someone from my yahoo account today and got the attached message!

This sucks. Not this image, but the first one I got today was actually really difficult to make out, I couldn't tell if something was a Z or a 7, and if something was a 1 or an I or just a random streak that's not meant to mean anything :/

Not only that, but each time I click continue, it takes pretty long (almost 10 seconds the first time, and consistently over 5 seconds) to load the next page

I understand its usefulness, but having to do this every time I send an email is going to get irritating. Blaaahhhrgh.

Ok, it goes something like this:

Spammers use automated processes to register E-Mail accounts, mine E-Mail addresses from webpages, join groups (to spam their message boards) among other nasty uses.

The challenge for companies like Yahoo, is to ensure that the people using their services are real people and not scripts. The usual answer therefore, is to make a challenge that only a live person can solve.

Usually that is done by encoding some characters into a picture in such a way that they could be read by a person but difficult or impossible for a piece of software to read it automatically.

You then enter the characters into the box and verify.

I had to do this once on a couple of Yahoo accounts I have its no big deal you only have to do it once.

That's odd, because I've never had to do it before and just had to do it for four emails I sent in a row today, and now I've just tried with two more test emails and I've had to enter it both times.

That really IS weird. I only had to do it once - I can't understand why you have to do it every time.

You should probably ask Yahoo Help (if possible), they should know what the hell is going on.

There have been problems with yahoo mail today, so I would say your problems are related to that. :(
