I have a 30 minute podcast that I want to take 2 minute segment out of to send to a friend. Can anyone reccommend any software to do this please?

I use a program called CoolEdit to do this. I think there's a trial available.

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder Free, fully-functional multi-track audio editor for Windows (98 and later), Macintosh (MacOS and OSX), and Linux.

Yeah, Audacity is great, just have to tell it where your local Lame MP3 encoder is (lame_enc.dll).
Search for it in Windows beforehand.

Nero (if you have it) has an editor built in too thats simple to use. Nero Wave Editor I think it is.

I use it to shave starts and endings off tracks when making a cd for the car and I run over a touch.

All of those methods involve the mp3 being decoded to WAV, the cut happening then, and then the trimmed part is re-encoded back to MP3. This loses a lot of quality, depending on the bit rate.

You can use mp3DirectCut to cut your mp3 (non-destructive) without having to re-encode.
