I am a musician from northern California. I play in a blues band called Downtown and the Feelers. See downtownandthefeelers.com . I plan on traveling in Ireland in the late half of March 2006 and would love to sit in on a set while I'm there. I play rythym guitar and sing. Is the jam still going on?

Also looking for a place to buy a guitar to play at the jam.

yes the jam is still happening - the march gathering is on the 31st - there are places to buy a guitar but be aware there are (quite playable) instruments at the club that you can borrow if you want to instead - most people just use what's there.
The shops in the area are essaness music, kieran st. and brodricks, new building lane - both in kilkenny city - not too hard to find ---- and there is also a vintage instrument specialist out in the village of thomastown ( 15 mins out ) who has a selection of old fenders and gibsons. he's on the web but i dont know the address. Also ad lib music in carlow town has a very large selection.
