Diabetes and blindness

The FDA have recently put out a warning that rosiglitazone (Avandia fmaily, GSK) and pioglitazone (Actos, Takeda) may cause macular oedema leading to blindness.

Diabetes induced retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults in the developed world.

While the risk of macular oedema is limited I propose that this is a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Couple this with existing doubts over generalised oedema caused by glitazones (and the risk of CHF) and you begin to wonder whether more R&D for better anti-diabetic medication is overdue.
