Getting online with no phone line

Is there any way to get online without a phone line? I've seen adverts for them vodafone cards you plug into your laptop. How exactly do these work and what is the cost for using them? Are there any alternatives to vodafone of better price/quality etc? Is there anything you can get that just say I had my wireless router at home constantly plugged in connected to the phone, that I could, wherever I was, with my laptop, have something connected that could dial something near my wireless router and then transmit the signal to the card in my laptop?

What's the best way to get online when there isn't the option of wireless/dial up etc?

    Cheers.

You could use a mobile phone with Infra red connection. Better getting one of those 3G ones if you have coverage.

My dad has a Satelite broadband system thingy at his offices :v: . There is a dish similar to a sky dish on the roof and it recieves the broadband from space :). I expected this to be very pricey but my dad says you dont actually buy the dish so all you pay for is installation and then a monthly fee.
If your interested ill get all the details tommorow.

Brilliant, I didn't realise there would be more options. ENDURANCEMEN if you could please find out as much information as you could about the satelite connection and who offers it, where I can find out about it please!

What would the 3G method involve and how much would it cost?

All I need is a connection, the amount of data being transferred will be minimal so the cheapest, most conveniant option. The vodafone wifi card is €5 for 30 minutes, quite steep.

    Cheers for the helpful replies!

if you want to use the 3g data card for proper browsing you're looking at spending around 300-1000 a month. its for businessmen who absolutely need the internet everywhere they go and don't mind paying for it. 99% of the time the company pays for it. i saw a bloke before that for some reason thought the data was free once he paid for the card. he managed to run up a bill of €3000 in a month

if you're lucky enough to be able to get ntl broadband (goes through the television cable) then get it. its pretty much the best out there.

as endurance man says there's the satellite option but thats fairly expensive too and there's a delay involved because the signal has to be transmitted into space. its only about a second or two but makes it completely unsuitable for gamers.
