CD-R Speed Woes

You know when you see the following written on a CD-R, "52X". Am I wrong in assuming that the cd should write at 52 speed.
I bought 50 52speed CD-Rs in Aldi yet they will only write at 4speed max (which as you can appreciate is very annoying and slow).
Last year I bought 150CD-Rs from Maplins, these were marked 4-48X, however only wrote at 8speed max. When I went back to Maplins, your man said that since it was a budget deal, the CDs could write at speeds of between 4 and 48 speed which was complete bull**** if you ask me
Does the number refer to the max read speed or somethin? I'm confused, I was always under the impression that it indicated the write speed.
    My CD-writer is 24speed.
Anyone able to shed any light?

Some drives handle crappy media better than others. That said, any discs i've got from aldi always wrote at 40x, the max speed of my drive.
It may be that your drive is a bit dirty? My Pioneer drive stopped burning DVD's after a while until I put one of those cleaning discs into it - its been fine since.

Give it a clean, see if the writer is limited by firmware - maybe get a Hacked Firmware and flash the bitch :D

    I never really burn @ >32x because i usually end up with a frisbee's :D

Damn. Sounds like some of you guys need some new hardware

I bought a Liteon CD-RW drive over 3 years ago, it is fast, cheap as heck and NEVER ONCE gave me a coaster ... even when I push the proverbial envelope - both on speed and overburn.

If any of you are in the market, here's my reccomendation Liteon CD/DVD+/-RW drive for €59.

(CD-RW drives are now obsolete it seems)
