    Hey,

Trying to play a movie from an MPEG file, but whatever application plays it - the file just locks up during playing. Restart the program, and it will stop playing (freezing) at different points of the film...

Sometimes happens when im watching DVD's I rent.

Why exactly is this? Iv closed down all programs, AV Scanner, Spyware scanner etc to see if them doing anything caused it - but no luck.

    Any ideas?

What codecs have you installed? If every application has this problem with any dvd then it looks like you have a dodgy decoder. Does it happen with hard disk files or just the dvd-rom?

DVD decoder problem? - have you tried reinstalling the program that enables you to play DVD's (e.g. PowerDVD/winDVD etc..)

Your DVD drive lens could be messed up? - scratched, something stuck in it, misaligned DVD tray?.

    Try the reinstallation path first.

Happens rarley - but seems to be cropping up again lately on both DVDs and this one hard drive file.

Normaly I can restart the program and it plays aware for ages, but not this MPEG. :./

This might actually be a CODEC issue..

Im preparing to format my PC and ill sort it all out after.

Try to reinstall the DVD-Playing Application.

failing that, try to install another one.

Then see if a firmware upgrade solves the problem

    Then try VLC media player.

Then try to rip the DVD from Disc to the hard drive (if there was no errors then it is 99.99% a codec problem)

    then try to format :P
