I think you'll be alright using your card on this site.

Doesn't it say the cert has expired when you push "begin application" button?

    [ valid certificate ]

Authentic Sites use thawte SSL Certificates to offer secure communications by encrypting all data to and from the site. thawte has checked and verified the company registration documents and the site's registered domain name.

This information is included in the SSL certificate that we issue. This enables you to check the site's validity yourself. Always check a site's certificate before entering any sensitive information. Below are the details for certificate: Department of the Environment and Local Government

[ organization ] Department of the Environment and Local Government
    [ domain ] www.drivingtest.ie
    [ country ] Ireland
    [ current status ] Valid
    [ valid from ] 2006.01.06
    [ valid until ] 2007.01.08

    Looks fine ;)

As another aside, that’s a woeful site. I don’t even want to know how much the dept of transport is actually paying for it.

Are your system clock settings correct? Over the New Year my PC shut itself down thanks to a broken fan causing over-heating, when I booted up the system clock had reset itself to 2002 and therefore some certificates were quoted as invalid because they weren't due to be valid for another three years!!

If you manually set your clock forward, say to avoid time-limitations on some free-software ;) (doesn't work on more sophisticated software) then that might cause also cause the problem :)

The cert was out of date for me as well in Firefox 1.5 but worse than that...

When I tried to use the driving test online application, it didn't work correctly in Firefox. It allowed me to enter all the details and submit and it "lost" the test centre selection on the summary page, just before you pay.

So... I dusted off Internet Explorer and went through it all again.. everything worked okay, arrived at the credit card payment page, entered my details, went to enter the CC expiry date, clicked on the drop down menu.. and it only goes up to 2010 when my card has an expiry date of 2011. It's almost 2007 so I'm guessing a lot of people have a CC with an expiry date past 2010.

    What a complete joke!

I decided to fire them off emails about it. One bitching about the lack of Firefox support and then another about the limited CC expiry dates.
    Hello again,

I had to take my chances using Internet Explorer to apply for the driving test on-line and after filling out the required information and verifying the details on the next page, I proceeded to enter my credit card details.... until I came to the "Expiry Date" dropdown and discovered it only goes up as far as 2010, which considering the expiry date on my credit card is 2011, makes it completely useless! I am guessing it's the same situation for a lot of people.

And we are meant to be the e-commerce hub of Europe?! I weep.

    Regards,
    Iain

    Previous email

    Hi,

It's impossible to apply on-line with the "On-line Application" using Firefox as a browser.

I can fill out the form and submit it, but the data entered in the "Driving Test centre" box is lost and comes up as undefined in the summary page.

In this day and age this really is unacceptable and especially with a government website. The Firefox browser commands over 15% of the browser market, so you are ignoring a large percentage of potential applicants.

For the record. I am browsing the site on a Windows 2000 system with a Firefox v1.5.0.8 browser.

    Regards,
    Iain

I know this is slightly off the point, but I had a similar problem as above with Firefox. While filling out a online form for a J1 visa it kept saying my name was entered incorrectly when I'd click to the next stage of the form. So I decided to give Internet Explorer a bash and it worked grand. Obviously Firefox doesn't support some of these online applications...

indeed, firefox is not as supported as ie. but its alot more secure.

it's certainly not Firefox's fault. It's down to buggy non compliant html or javascript on the site itself.

At least drivingtest.ie got back to me quickly.
we are aware of the credit / debit card problems and hope to rectify same in a forthcoming update of the site.
Your alternatives are to use other payment cards or submit a postal application.

There are icons to update a PC's browser on the bottom of the webpage to Netscape / Microsoft Internet explorer.

The first paragraph, while kinda sad (ie need a whole update when adding about 10 characters to a file would do it, the joys of outsourcing stuff!) is fair enough.

The second paragraph, misses the point completely! Oh well. I have printed out the form and will have to do it the 20th century way, assuming it doesn't get lost in the post! :-D
