I recently did a job for a friend which involved registering and setting up a domain, configuring a few pop3 mail accounts, configuring client machines for same, setting up webhosting and building (and populating) the site with OsCommerce.

What sort of money should I be looking at charging for the job? Any opinions? Im not really sure what he would pay commercially or to someone else who does this kind of stuff on the side.

Good few, maybe 10-12. I probably could have done it much quicker if id applied myself more.

€10 per hour for 12 hours? (based on him being a friend)

edit: plus the cost of the domain / hosting / licenses of course.

CiaranC, be carefull, you dont know what kind of value your friend has placed on your work and what ever you ask him for could be a bad surprise. I am not saying its not worth it. Probably worth a lot more in fact.
If you want friends and family to stay friends you have to agree a price up front.

Its too easy with friends (done it myself) to say "Dont worry about it, we will sort payment afterwards". In your mind you are thinking €100. In his mind he is thinking €15. In the end he feels cheated or you do.

Good point Figment. To be honest, I wasnt thinking of charging him at all, but he deals in used cars and I have asked him to source me a new one and sell mine using his contacts in exchange for the work. Im just trying to get an idea if the work he will put in on that side is equivalent.

Thats exatly what you should do...

Its a win win situation then. You get a good price, he gets a web site..

also, if he has a business will he want a paper invoice?

Yes you could print one (using your own full name, and then you are a "sole trader" but you would then need to declare that "income" to the revenue commussioners in the usual way, and maybe pay tax on it)

As Jank says, use the car route, that way you both win.

If he cheats you with a pile of a car, shut down the website ;)
