aldi did a dvd recorder a while back - TDR5101 TEVION
    plays dvd+/- r/rw cd-r/rw jpeg mpeg mp3 divx & more
has all sorts of inputs/outputs (even a connection for usb )

dunno the original selling price at the time, but i picked one up last week for 149.99 - poss the same price  but they sometimes drop to clear remaining one or two.

I'm trying to find out if it's region free or if there's a way of changing the coding but no luck so far, google is not my friend so far :(

the manual has the following on region codes (bold text is my doing):
since it is very usual for dvd movies to be released at different times in different regions of the world all players have region codes and discs can have an optional region code.
however the region code of the player/recorder is not shown anywhere I could see. usually there is a number on a 'globe' logo indicating the region.
the unit can output both PAL & NTSC - dunno if this means anything??

maybe in this case all players have region codes might refer to a coding of '0' which is worldwide ?

I know from previous posts on here that lidl / aldi dvd players can be unlocked so might be just a matter of time with this one too ;).

anyone else have one of these that could give more info??

Have you tried Videohelp.com? They have a good database of players and multiregion "solutions"

Sorry to jump in on your thread :D

A friend of mine is looking for a dvd recorder with a harddrive that plays xvid/divx. Is there any out that do the above?

    Try this one Kaisersoze77

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006J376O/qid=1137568945/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_3_6/203-2747834-4717531

Have a look on Amazon for models. There are loads of recorders with hard drives. I'm not too sure about xvid though.

Yoman... I have a document with loads of unlock codes. I got my Philips recorder for under €250 and unlocked it. It was a bit tricky but worked just fine. I have a DR610 I think. If you want a unlock procedure just PM me when you've found the recorder you're thinking of and I'll tell you if I have the code.

    Cheers

    Mike

    Hi Mike

Thanks a lot for that, I will PM you if I decide to go for a Philips, don't think I will get the DVDR610 though, I have read a ton of bad reviews on it, clock advancing of ifs own accord, locking up etc!! Might see if philips have the later model to that.

    Thanks for the help though.

I recently got a dvd 160 gb HDD recorder from Komplett, the LG RH7900.
It came in about €370 incl postage but it was well worth it. A great buy in my opinion and with a few taps on the remote it is a region-free player. It also plays Divx files.
