im after losing a sh!tload of data off an external hard drive.

i backed it up to a temp internal drive and was to transfer it to my new external drive. unfortunately both temp drive and new drive died. (the new drive didnt ever seem to work!!)

anyway now im left with the original external drive. problem is it has been formatted and new data written to it. What are my chances of being able to roll back the format and read my original data off this drive?
    any help appreciated...

What happened to your temp internal drive's backup data?

Some good/expensive apps can recover data after a format but only from areas of the disc that have not been written over yet.

You could have a look at these two links. But they are not freeware.

new drive appears to have never worked although i may be wrong on that count.

active data recovery pro is an app i've used before to recover data after a mishap. it wasnt as bad as this though. what happened before was the external drive was connected to a laptop. a mate was trying to format the laptops internal drive and using the win xp setup cd entered the blue screen yokie (im not sure what this is called) anyway he selected to delete my external drive instead of his internal drive by mistake. a format didnt actually occur. using active data recovery i got it all back.

now what has happened is this: i had a 300gig external drive with 2 partitions of 150gig each or so. i used partition magic to delete & merge both partitions and then format to 1x300gig NTFS partition. Then i wrote about 20gig of stuff to the drive. so there was about 250 odd gigs of space. if i can role back the format, merge and delete somehow then some of my data might be on that unwritten 250gigs? is this correct?

how do i roll back the format, merge and delete?
i will try active data recovery as soon as i can this weeekend.
    any other tips?

i was looking at these products:

    http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
    http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoveryprofessional/index.asp?pageTarget=Welcome&buttonName=EasyRecovery
    http://www.iolo.com/sr/3/

the first and third seem to be what im after. the third claims to be able to:Recover from formatted drives, even after Windows is reinstalled

    i hope it works...
