VBNets in Tralee/ Killarney will have Motorola Wireless cards and Wireless Routers available from the start of Feb.

    €11 ish for Card
    €30 ish for the Router

I don't have anymore details, but as far as I know they'll be something along the lines of WN825g and WR850G

You have to ring them cos their website is rubbish. I was speaking to Peter.

Would this be any good for playing Xbox life over a wireless network?

I've no idea about the xbox networking capabilities. I have two of the WR850G units bridged from the house to the garrage/office and it works perfectly. so if you wanted to use them like that and buy two units then it would probably work just fine. but I'd ask around about the xbox networking first.

So you have one attached to were the broadband comes in. Its signal is send wirelessly to your bridge then you use your RJ45 cable to hook up your pc?

I think thats what I want.

The way I have it hooked up is:

    Internet>>>Esat Broadband Modem>>>WR850G ^^^^ WR850G>>>PC & Laptop

The connection between the two units is wireless.

Where are they located in Tralee/Killarney. I might be able to pick them up, it'd save me a bit of money on postage.

don't know. i've only ever ordered over the phone.

So say I usually connect to the internet via cat5 cable from the socket in the wall(I live in apartments with broadband installed) usually.

Now all i have to do is plug in the wireless router instead of the laptop and it should send the wireless signal out..?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 546 ✭✭✭exactiv

pretty much. the setup of the unit depends on the network you're plugging into.

You can set all of the details that you have in your network connection TCP/IP setting on the router, then you can use the wireless to connect to the router which should give you a DHCP & NATed ip address. So, yes it should work.

yes but you will also need to enable some security for the wireless or else yer whole apt block will be able to use your wireless connection. Enable WEP encryption and disable the broadcast id of the modem at the minimum!

Can these routers take directional antennas?

    Cheers

I can't remember what connection is on the back (I think it's sma or reverse sma), but the little aerials on the back just screw off. I haven't got the right pigtail to attach one of my directionals to it.

I'd say it'd be no problem. You thinking long distance link?

Good stuff - yeah, I need to link up two buildings, and its too far for any of my omni-directional gear. Will give em a look, cheers.

Rang Peter in January said he'd have the gear in Feb.

Rang him again last friday, he said he had routers but not the rest of the gear and he'd ring me back monday with prices.

Never rang me back so I email him for quotes and availability and he replied saying he had none in stock

Has anyone actually got any of the gear exactiv mentioned? Im just waiting till it's on his ebay shop again.

    hi.

I rang peter myself this week (tuesday I think). He said he has the routers in stock but the wireless cards aren't arriving til the end of next week.

I'll be ringing him on friday week to find out about stock.

    Cheers.

I don't know what is going on with VBNETS. Was just speaking to Peter and he said that the routers they got in were the wrong ones and they had been sent back to the supplier. He also said they wouldn't be getting any more of them... Sounded like a bull**** excuse to me. Looks like VBNETS have fallen off the radar....
