Hopefully someone can shed some light on this one...

I know someone with a 99 Escort... , exhaust went on it a couple of weeks ago so they havent been using it until they can get a change to leave it in to be repaired...

They have been starting the car every day or so to keep it ticking over...

however heres the problem... for some reason the alarm/immobiliser goes off when the engine is started and keeps going - even when the engine is off until the battery runs down... they didnt even know this car had an alarm or immobiliser!

any ideas on what might be causing this?

They should have an alarm key-looks like a bike lock key-that they can use to manually turn off the alarm and immob. Open up the bonnet and there should be a fairly easy to spot black box with a key hole in it. Just turn it off and the alarm is disabled

yes-find the red wire that feeds the alarm and pull the fuse out or cut it.

You sure the battery is good ? If the car is being started just to keep it oiled up, it's not ideal for the battery. The battery might be enough to start the car up but might be too weak for "extras" such as radio, alarm, wipers, etc.

I had a problem with the immobiliser in my car when the battery started going bad - it would turn the engine over okay, but the immobiliser would not disengage. Even with a jump from another car, same problem. I had to bypass the immobiliser relay temporarily, get a jumpstart, and then change the battery and rewire the immobiliser back in.

(immobiliser was a wireless relay from a Clifford alarm)
