Going to the US next month and want to get the girlfriend a laptop while there.

What's the story if it breaks down when we get home?
Is there anyway we can make a warranty claim?

Gonna be in Boston and NYC so can anyone recommend anywhere to get good value laptops? Will try CompUSA for a start.

    thanks

Some do international warranty. Not sure if the extra cost would make it worth while. Also make sure the PSU can handle 220/230/240V

If they don't then walk away, as you'd risk getting stung for VAT etc. when it came back for repair !

Looking at getting an Acer from CompUSA
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=336977&pfp=BROWSE

Acer's site mentions an International Travelers Warranty (http://global.acer.com/support/itw.htm)
Doesn't seem to apply here though.

You would need to look into this very carefully. It looks like it covers a laptop purchased by a US resident who is travelling, not a person who travels to the US to purchase a laptop.
