    Hi all,

Just before Xmas, my brand new Dell Laptop was stolen when I was visitnig Cork.... Does anybody know if Dell install any tracking chips or is there any way that it can be tracked if its being used anywhere on the net? This is really p155ing me off... I have reported it to the Gardai, but surprise surprise they can do nothing about it now... They'll call me if it turns up somewhere - like thats gonna happen... I'm not holding my breath though.... I've had a few weeks to get used to the idea that its gone... but if any1 knows of any way of tracking it, then I'd really appreciate any help at all.

    Thanks in advance....

Unless you installed monitoring software that could report the IP address when it's connected to the net, to an email for example, there's no way to track it. The IP address would be tracable to whoever is using it. I think I remember seeing software like this somewhere, obviously you didn't have it though, and Dell would not have installed it I think.

The MAC address of the network card is also a unique identifier, so if you knew what that was you might be able to track it to an IP. I have no idea if it's possible to trace a MAC address, that may or may not be connected, on the internet though. I think it's possible on a LAN, but on the 'net?
