Counter Strike: Source and DVI Resolution Problem

    Hi Lads

I recently got a new 24 inch Dell Widescreen monitor. I was using a stand D-Sub (VGA) cable to connect it to my graphics card and all was well. I selected 16:10 as the aspect ratio in the game settings and could chose any resolution between 720 x 480 all the way up to 1920 x 1200.

I normally run the game at 1280 x 800 to ensure a fps of 100+.

For image quality reasons, I am using a DVI cable now and this this improve the image quality no end on the monitor. However, I am now unable to select any resolution other than 1680 x 1050 and 1920 x 1200..

When I switch back to a normal VGA cable I have access to all the resolutions again.. However, when I got back to DVI, they are gone again..

Anyone any idea? I have the Dell 240FPW and a Nvidia 6800 Ultra.

That's normal for DVI. I can't remember the reasons for it off the top of my head, but it could be something to do with those being the only supported resolutions via DVI.

    I'm running a 2001fp from a 6800 through DVI; it'll allow me to step down from 1600*1200, 1280*1024, 1152*864, 1024*768 and 800*600.
IIRC that was the story when it was through dsub too...

    Looks like it's SLi time...

I assume that that monitor has an aspect ratio of 4:3..

Hmmmm defo time for a new desktop with a 7800 me thinks..

Anyone know if the resolution can be forced in the console?

You tried updating the monitor drivers from the dell site?

I think you can use a program called powerstrip to force new possible resolutions into your display drivers. Doesn't do any harm at all, necessary for lots of DVI related widescreen flat panel problems. Takese a bit of fecking around to get it right though.

    try

right clicking the game in the games list in steam
    hit properties,
    launch options,

type in there (i think this is it)

    -w *800* -h *600*

you can obiviously changed the 800 x 600 bit to what you wish also no need for the stars.
this should force CS to use this resolution.

i usually set fps_max to 60 and turn vsync off for hl2 related games (on an LCD)

i thought playing at a lower resolution boosts your fps?

Yeah, but running an LCD monitor in its non-native resolution makes everything look sh1t.

I want to run it at 1280 x 800 as it is in the correct aspect ratio for the monitor and the FPS is constant..

1280 x 1024 is the wrong aspect ratio.

1680 x 1050 is correct but the FPS suffers at points and thats no good...

Im running a 2405fpw on an ati x800xt platinum edition at the moment. So this doesnt really count but i have noticed different resolution settings between DVI and VGA. Also do you really find that DVI makes much of a difference clarity wise Jesus?? Soz im not much help to you.

Is the Dell monitor selects as the monitor in display properties, or is something like "Plug in and Play Monitor"?

You sure it isn't the 2405 FPW? Can't find anything about the 240 but the 2405 pulls up loads of pages in the Dell.com site

Just to clarify, I have the Dell 2405FPW, sorry about that.. Its definatly not the the monitor as the resolutions are being restricted in the Source Settings screen within the game..

The game seems to be detecting that I am using DVI to the monitor and has restricted the resolutions available.. When I go back to a standard D-Sub cable, the resolutions all come back and work perfectly..

Its seems to be related to the DVI standard but meh...

There is a massive difference in clarify between DVI and VGA I find..

You had a problem before where you could not get DVI working, ever get this sorted?

I presume you do realise that VGA is input 1, DVI is input 2, S-Video is input 3, Composite is input 4 and Component is input 5. To change between the inputs, you use the button to the very left on the group of control on the monitor..
