Freeview on laptop

I'm not sure if this is against the rules. Apologies if it is.

I saw an AverMedia pcmcia card that it said would work with freeview. I could not find this for sale but found another one that it said would work with digital TV. Will this work for Freeview with out a Freeview box? If not can software decode it? Obviously I am planning on using this in an area that can get freeview.

Again if this is against the rules I apologize. I thought it was OK to talk about freeview.

    Thanks.

Freeview needs no decoder. It is the UK terrestrial Digital system. A laptop adapter without roof aerial will need a good signal. It is the equivalent of a freeview box.

In Ireland it would need a big mast and a quad array aerial.

Digital Satellite adaptors for notebooks exist too and will get most of the same channels (no C4 and Five) and many extra ones. You need a portable 45cm dish and LNB too, ideally a 60cm to 70cm dish if raining hard.

Decoding or converting Digital video data (MPEG2 or MPEG4) is quite different to decoding or descrambling an encrypted signal, and is quite legal anywhere in Eu from any source.

If it is DTT Freeview or Satellite FTA, then there is no encryption.

If it is an encrypted signal then it is theft to decode it without correct payment to the correct service provider.

I am planning to use this in an area where I believe it is possible to get Freeview in Wexford. If I plug the arial into my laptop (assuming there is a signal) will it work or will I need a Freeview box?

    Cheers.

It will work if the aerial is powerful enough (the one that comes with the PCMCIA card probably won't be unless you're very near the transmitter in Britain or Northern Ireland) - connect it to a strong signal aerial in Wexford though and you might get something. I've gotten mine to work in the North using the aerial that came with the card, but we happened to be driving near a DTT transmitter.

Cheers, it will probably be months before I get to try it but thanks for the info.
