Codec bandwidth comparisons (G711 vs. G729)

Attached are 2 images detailing the bandwidth (in & out) for the same call made using the G711 (default high-quality codec on most ATA's & software) and the G729 (bandwidth-optimised) codecs. As you can see there's a big difference in bandwidth required for the two. Anyone who's experiencing VoIP quality problems on a broadband connection that's not consistently rock-solid above 100kbits/sec should probably consider trying out the G729 codec.

That is quite interesting. Is there a noticeable difference in quality?

Aaron, if you're about what is your stance on it?

The difference isn't really noticeable - at least not to my ears anyway. I'm on a DECT cordless handset.

Did you have problems before changing codec? Did people say it sounded 'wierd'?

The main problems that I was having were related to insufficient upstream bandwidth. I rarely get 80kbits/sec upstream even on a good day so the calls using G711 were regularly suffering to the point of embarrassment on my part! Changing codec was the only option as I've no other upstream broadband product available to me and it has so far got rid of all quality problems. Noone has commented on any quality issues with G729 either (unlike when calls were constantly getting interrupted while I was using G711).

g.729 is carrier grade stuff, you would be hard pushed to notice the difference in all reality (especially with people so used to mobiles these days), ive only seen one poor chinese implementation that didnt quite sound right. also worth looking at if you have an asterisk system is trunking for multiple calls that gives you a rather large bandwidth saving as the number of calls grows (nortel and cisco systems do this as well).

saw this on freespeech.ie today in their knowledgebase

We recommend G729A as the preferred codec. G729 will give the best balance between call quality and bandwidth usage. G729 is only available on hardware phones or non-free softphones.

    Have a look at this:

I changed to the G729a and problem solved. Worked for me anyway.:)
