    Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good antivirus software other than Norton.

I found the latest version of Norton to be extremely heavy on resources and just want something simple to run in the backgroud without slowing my machine.

    Thanks in advance!
    Tom

Has to be AVG Free edition - small on resources, free virus database updates, and it found 32 viruses on my PC that Norton had missed when I installed it first

Used to use McAfee, AVG Anti-Virus does just as good a job and it's free!

does it update itself automatically, i rebuilt a lot of pcs for friends and family, and i am looking for a good antivirus that will

quarentine without giving virus found messages (i get phone calls every time)
update itself (sometimes norton can fall behind and never catch up)
just be reilable, sometimes norton just stops loading

i found norton corporate edition is just brilliant, but would prefer a free one

It claims on the website that it updates once a day, but for me it updates every time I boot the PC. One of the beauties is that you never have to restart the program or give it permission to update, it does it automatically with no user intervention.

Quarantine - I'm not too sure, I've definitely seen quarantine 'advisory' messages pop up, where the only option is ok, but it has to be clicked. I'm not sure if that can be turned off, can't see anywhere obvious in the preferences.

I've never had any issues with it not updating or not starting etc, have been using it now happily for about 2 years. When I recently installed Thunderbird to replace Outlook, it seemed to require no re-configuring, which may have been just luck though!

Using AVG at the moment and its working a charm, easy to update, pretty secure and uses feck all resources. What more could you ask for really.

As the chapo said they were undetected by orton so he installed AVG! Presumably AVG subsequently removed the viruses.

That's what you get for browsing dodgy porn sites.

I can actually read suprisingly enough! The point I was making, is how does one get 32 Virus' on to one's PC in the first place!

    Dodgy porn I agree!

Actually its AntiVir I'm using not AVG, its monday i'm allowed to get at least a little confused.

I've actually heard very good things about NOD32, must try it out sometime I feel like actually paying for Antivirus s/w.

Exactly what I was thinking too, when AVG finished its full scan I was expecting a big message flashing up on screen saying "AVG has detected 32 viruses and 1 case of carpal tunnel syndrome"

I agree, i switched from AVG to Nod 32 and it's much better, scans are a lot quicker, nicer interface and updates itself daily same as AVG.

    Grrr ... Norton is evil.

AVG anti Virus is relatively good, but it missed 2 viruses on my machine in the last year, still though its free.

And as to how you can get viruses - very easily. Dodgy websites can put them on your machine, very easily especially if you're using an insecure installation of Internet Explorer, don't have a firewall port scanners can patch into something, also dodgy attachments to emails that look like they come from a friend (thought its mostly non-tech n00bs that fall for that one).

My old trick had been to disable all scripting features on IE and depend on my firewall (McAffee Personal Firewall Express) to keep the crap out, and use AVG AV only as a pennultimate line of defense, but I got hit by the WMF bug last week (AVG didnt pick up the resulting loader.exe but my firewall did) after that I said f*ck this and started using FireFox.

it was probably the same virus 32 times

it was just trying to spread its seed throughout the machine

Yeah, it was a long time ago, but I do remember they were all of the same type, maybe with slight variations.

Well that makes sense I guess. The argument of Cracks/illegal stuff I don't understand. I download stuff and I never have had a virus.

i can't believe that nobody had mentioned !avast

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

it's free, automatically updates on a daily basis, very thorough scan and runs a number of provider scanners, e.g. p2p scanner etc.

avg and this can also be run in conjunction with one another and NOT cause conflicts.
