When is a good time to start cycling? eg weather problems etc you don't notice these things while in school! And the reason I'm asking here instead of the college board is because triniyt is in town which is way different tahn cycling to UCD/others.

Any tips on saving money going out?

Any tips on keeping money costs low?

I'm aware there was a lecture on this during fresher's week but I was confsued that whole week... (ye "confused")

give up beer/ drink for the new year or failing that get your own brewing kit. i once made homemade wine so it is possible. failing that become an expert on wine receptions in TCD. or become a special agent and raid the cellars under front square. try power walking for exercise or roller blading.

get your parents to make you packed lunches. win the lotto..get a job in investment banking...write up all your accounts up onto excel and see if your input exceeds your output...

    Sell a kidney.

If you do go out, get the last bus home instead of a taxi or the fightlink. You'll also have less time to spend money on alcohol.

If you ask the SU welfare officer nicely she's got some free condoms in her office in House 6.

Check the notice board in AAP, sometimes there's ppl looking for lab rats for projects and they pay.

I've tried pretty much all of the above ideas, bar John2's and to be honest the thing is that when you have money, it'll get spent, regardless of how much free stuff you get as well.
And as for giving up drinking? Don't make me laugh.

yeah i subjected myself too those tests and got 20eur. but don't know if it was worth it learning off parts of people's faces and trying to remember them and then seeing if you fit the norm for your age group in terms of memory.

If you're dressed for the occasion you can cycle any-time.

Drink before you go out. Develop taste's for bavaria etc. If you can bring your bag in then sneak booze in (not advising this technically, but I do it). Develop an attitude that you're being ripped off in pubs-clubs so you'll buy WAY less booze there. Brewing is effort and won't save you that much money in the long run. Especially if you want to do it right.
Any tips on keeping money costs low?
Packed lunch, packed lunch, packed lunch! I'll say it again... packed lunch. Stop drinking coke/fanta/etc. Just carry a plastic bottle in ur bag etc and keep it filled with water. Get coffee/soup/hotchoc out of the machine in the hamilton. Don't go to any place with service.. Buy your clothes in pennys/unique (I'm assuming male here?). Great style/selection and even better prices.

All of the above worked for me amazingly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

dear god noooooooooooooooooooooo.....don't touch the coffee out of the hamliton machine it is possibly the worst coffee -like stuff ever :(:(:(...Pennys is great especially for socks and pjs..

get teabags and just buy the boiling water for 10cents and not the paper cups as they're extra...or get a flask to keep the coffee warm (eg make it at home).
you could try buying a brewing kit over the net..in marks and spencers you can get some wine for 4eur..also if you eat things like nuts they're high in protein and polyunsaturated fat and will keep you going for longer without chocolate etc...also cheese is good for energy...and if you need meat just get mussels off sandymount strand or become a fisherman...or grow cherry tomatoes in your garden for the vitC and to stop you getting scurvy (they're easy to grow if you've seeds i gre them before)..also you can grow things like radishes and peas in nearly all weather but watch the morning frost as that will kill them, and plant them a few inches apart and keep them well watered..

Ah.. you're not a real science student then. It's not the flavour but the caffeine "hit" we be after. Though actually the espresso out of it is really quite nice! Veg soup and hot choc are too, though the latter is a little powdery, still nice. Em... what else, the minestrome soup is disgusting.

i was always more of a trip over to centra for coke, or make my own coffee when got closer to exams(extra caffene hit, ~9 spoons/cup :) )...

    9 spoons/cup
. I tend to go for 1 spoon of coffee and two spoons of sugar. Crazy!

It actually isn't raining most of the time so you should be cycling all the time, unless you couldn't be bothered. Cycling also means you don't need to worry about whether to get the last bus, the nitelink or a taxi, as long as you take your bike off campus before midnight. Don't worry about cycling home drunk, just get an Alanya's before you head home and that'll give you time to wake up a bit. If you're cycling regularly then you'll probably be so familiar with the route then you could do it with your eyes closed anyway.

i didnt bring money to college last week and i would guess i saved about 50 euro but it went horribly wrong when i went out thursday night, drank b4 but for some reason i always end up buying booze wherever i am...

Buy your food in Dunnes Stores, their St Bernard's brand is perfectly good and extremely cheap. Try and buy things you can make more than one meal out of rather than just ready meals. You can get enough St Bernard's rice for a month for less than a euro. :D

    Tips on saving money:

    - Look around a lot and be uber-prepared to get a great apartment within an easy (15-20 mins max) walk of the city centre

    - Only buy books if you are sure you need them and can't use the ones in the library

    - Eat in the buttery, or make your own food. Be mindful of where you go to lunch (it adds up)

    - Get a job that pays well

    - Only buy CD's on ebay

    - Get lots of books of vouchers and use them

    - Travel to Wales on the Ferry and come back with sh*t loads of alcohol if you want that

    - Give up sugar so you don't have to buy or become indebted to your neighbours for borrowing some (unless you fancy them)

    - Go to ALDI and LIDL to get inexpensive groceries

    - Buy clothes in charity shops only

    Have fun...

As suggested, for drinking, begin getting to know your free receptions. I don't know how much money i saved during AGM season last year, but goddamn it was a fair bit. i rarely went out to the pub after and bought more than one pint, cus i was already fairly drunk - was great!

When you're in a pub, already pissed, dont buy another pint just because you want a drink. go for water. 1) it'll save you money and 2) increase your chances of not having to get a taxi home simply cus you can't walk it.

Walk home after a night out. its easy. i do it all the time, and its only about an hours walk (you also walk faster if you're drunk and have some music to walk to)

I agree, and the walk home will sober you up enough that you won't get the spins or be hung over the next day.

don't bring out your atm card. Find cheap white wine you can drink really quickly and neck the bottle before headin out, that should set the mood. Either that or buy your cans four at a time in the pav (six in centra and pretend). Cycle everywhere, it'll be good for the anger and it's fun when you're pissed (I've been doing it for years and have only got minor flesh wounds). food related matters involve raiding your parents fridge when you go home and surviving on cheapo german discount store "food" because what doesn't kill ya will horribly weaken you to the point of deluding yourself into thinking your lifestyle is ok. ARRRRRRRRRR!!!

Someone said buy CDs on eBay. That's a bit silly when there's a much easier way to get music for free...

That doesn't work for me. Anytime I've tried to ride my bike while drunk I ALWAYS fall and I ALWAYS hurt myself, sometimes seriously. And don't even talk to me about rollerblading drunk! Death on wheels!

    But mp3s suck!

Also, if you're a first year, buy your own tux.

Either get one new, or buy an amazing 2nd hand armani one on the USA ebay for the same price you'd pay over here, or simply walk into all the charity shops you go past over the next month, and pick one up there.

Drink too much at conventions; be lazy and get a taxi from Burlington to town; buy a large Whopper Meal; get the Nitelink home; wake up in bits; spend money recovering from too much Guinness last night with sandwiches and energy drink; hide in the GMB computer room for most of the day.

No wait, that isn't a good idea :(.

Shopping: Develop a taste for Asian food, then go to Moore Street and buy loads of cheap curries and 10kg bags of noodles and rice and other such substances. Buy anything freezable in bulk, but get your bread and milk fresh every couple of days.

Eating: Always eat breakfast - if you skip it, you'll spend 3 or 4 euro every day on ****e to make up for skipping breakfast. Get used to the early bird specials around town - South Street on Georges Street do a really good €8 special that'll fill you up nicely, and if I remember correctly it runs till about 6pm. There's other places, like Tutti; ask around and you'll be given a fistful of suggestions.

Drinking: Either don't drink - unlikely - or else stick to free/cheap drink. Make a promise to yourself that you won't buy yourself a drink for a week and see how it goes - you can do quite well.

Music: Two options, apart from stealing it. One is to shop only in City Discs - they're easily the best record shop in the city, and their secondhand range is phenomenal. The other is to refuse to buy anything that costs more than ten or twelve quid. The Maximo Park album is about €20, and you can buy Marquee Moon by Television for half that in Tower (they always have cheap albums worth buying, by the way). Do the smart thing and buy Marquee Moon. There are always fistfuls of albums going cheap - there's bound to be one that's at least as good as whatever dross you're thinking about buying today.

Clothes: Fly to London, go into H&M and Zara's gents sections, and splurge. If you buy enough, you may actually be able to stay overnight in a fancy hotel and save money - H&M in particular is insanely cheap. The one in Dundrum isn't as good though, so if you're going to London soon bring cash and an empty suitcase.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
