Ok, my PC detects a local area connection of 100Mbps and says so by displaying a little icon of two computers in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. However, I am unable to connect to the internet! the internet worked fine on my old computer but when I plugged it into my new computer it never started working!

Any tips would be appreciated - I dont know what I could be missing!

    ok first things first,

How did you used to connect to the internet, try to explain in as much detail as possible, ie. have you changed your broadband provider, or maybe your modem?

Haven't changed anything since I got the new computer! I literally just took the wire going to the modem out of one computer and plugged it in to the next one! It's all very confusing!

    is it a new PC?

Ok, that means your computer has no connection to your broadband even though you have 2 little computers flashing.

What modem/router are you using to connect to your computer?

Are you using the correct phone number/username/password........

Havent actually entered any phone number/username/password into the computer yet but don't know where it would be entered! Any tips?

Take it that I'm starting from scratch! Like, if you were connecting a brand new computer to the internet, where would you start? Do any of you know the ISP phone number for eircom broadband?

Just want to say again, all this help is great, thanks!

In the command prompt, type ipconfig and check the result. If you get something like this then the Default Gateway is your router/modem.
    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.33
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Try to ping it. In my case that would be ping 192.168.1.1

Your IP Address should be in the same range as the router, i.e. 192.168.1.XXX, where XXX is 0 to 255 will work on mine.

Check your ipconfig anyway and post the result.

edit: Oh, you are connecting by ethernet aren't you, and not USB? Just to make sure.

Yes, ethernet is the one - will do that ipconfig now!

ok, nothing came up for default gateway but an IP address came up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Lisapeep

    the IP address begins 192.168......

IP address in the range 192.168.X.X are local so you can freely post it here. No-one can hack you by knowing it. Mine is 192.168.1.33, as will thousands of others.

Anyway, since you have no default gateway, that's the problem. You can't see the router, hence no internet. Do you know the ipaddress of the router or who provides the broadband.

If it's BT then the router will be 192.168.1.1 by default, unless you changed it. I think Eircom's are normally 192.168.0.1, though I could be wrong.

Try this, click the flashing computer icon in the system tray, this will bring up the network status. Click Properties in the bottom left corner and scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and double click on it.

Select "Use the following IP address" and enter 192.168.1.33, then 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet mask and the routers IP address for the default gateway.

If the router is in the 192.168.0.X range then make your IP 192.168.0.33. OK all that and reboot the computer. That *should* do it, unless there's another problem that we're missing. You shouldn't have to do all this though. If the router is set to give out addresses by DHCP, and your PC is set to obtain IP Address Automatically then it should work.

Windows networking can be a bit of a bitch sometimes though, at least for me it is anyway.
