ATA - QOS possible with Grandstream Handytone 488?

    Hi,

I'm looking to get an ATA and it must have an FXO port.
I currently have a wireless router on my network but it doesn't support QOS (Netgear wg624).
The grandstream 488 has what I seem to need (FXO and QOS support). I don't think the QOS will work if I connect the ATA box to my router, is that right?
If I connect the ATA box between my telephone line and my router will QOS then work? Are their any disadvantages to this setup?

    Thanks!

hmm, ok... I'll rephrase my question.
Are there advantages/disadvantages to which side of the router an ATA box is connected, ie between the telephone line and the router or behind the router?
eg, problems with router firewall, portforwading, QOS, etc..

I wouldn't expect to see any real QOS difference with either arrangement as I think that the QOS facility in the ATA is only for the tagging of VoIP traffic so that it can be prioritised by ISP's that support that sort of thing.

    Ah, I see. Thanks!
I will put it behind the router so. QOS shouldn't be too much of a problem. Testing the Blueface trial at the moment using a softphone. Had some downloads going on the network and call was still ok, although the user on the other side said they had a bad echo... not sure why!

You could try using the G729 codec. It's a lot more bandwidth friendly and in my experience has also helped with echo. It might seem obvious but the less bandwidth you use, the less QOS issues you're likely to have.
